Maverick T5 clutch cable

    Hi, I'm currently in the process of converting my Maverick to a 5-speed manual from a 3-speed auto. The C4 is out, the clutch pedal is in, and I'm getting ready to take measurements to cut my transmission tunnel. I'm looking at Mustang Steve in order to get a clutch cable kit and would like some feedback from anyone who has used his setup, such as what was all needed to be done, or if someone could recommend a better linkage. Thanks.

    when we installed Earls' T-5 in his '69.5 we didn't cut the tunnel..we just trimmed the rib...that's the new T-5 crossmembers i sell...;)

    Earl may be able to tell you where he got his setup...

    didnt cut my tunnel either, but i have noticed that my engine angle is just a tad off. maybe i need to look into that :huh:

    mine's a '71 btw, but i dont think it makes a difference


    and i fabbed up my own cable in mine :yup:

    I don't understand. For a floor shifter, wouldn't it be necessary to cut the tunnel?

    oh right, yup..... you'll need a hole for the shifter (forgot all about it, lol)

    i havent used the Mustang Steve setup, but i know someone on here has. i remember them talking about it. you may be able to find the post thru the search function at the top of the forum. as for me, i went to the local parts house, found a cable i could work with, did a little fabbing, and been driving it like that for over a yr now :drive:

    some people think you have to cut the tunnel out and rebuild it to install the T-5...:yup:

    yeah, that's the first thing that hit my mind too. people mention it often and it's the first thing that i think of, so i totally forgot about the shifter hole :slap:

    I got the ccable kit from Mustang Steve, on E-bay. I ordered it for a 1970 Mustang. To install the quadrant, you weld it to the pedal with the supplied template. You also have to dimple the cowl to clear the quadrant.

    any other suggestions on other types of cable clutch linkages? I also heard that a steeda or upr kit would work. would they both require the welding and dimpling processes?

    i dont think you're going to be able to make it work w/o some fabbing.... nothing is going to be a "bolt in" for these cars since the underdash area is different from anything else :(

    Where and how do I mount the firewall brace? and how much does the cowl need to be dimpled?

    The instructions for the firewall brace and cable come with the kit, as does the instructions for dimpling the cowl. You will need about 3/8" above the quadrant. Just be carefull and don't poke a hole in the cowl and you will be ok. The kit has very detailed instructions. Good luck!

    I used the Mustang steve quadrant and cable, and fabbed my own firewall brace. The instructions it comes with are very easy to understand, and it's not a difficult install at all. You just weld the quadrant to the top of the clutch pedal and then drill a hole in the firewall for the cable to run through. You will have to dimple the underside of the cowl slightly, but that just takes a few solid hits from a ball peen hammer. It only needs to be pushed up about 1/4"-3/8". For the firewall brace I used a piece of anlgle iron cut and drilled to run the clutch cable through.
