I had ordered the entire weatherstrip kit a while back and today had someone come out and install the windshield ones since it's going to be raining soon. The gasket was too long by a foot and the poor guy tried everything he could to make it fit but ended up not working out. Front glass went in pretty smoothly. I called Autokrafters, spoke to Ron who right away said that since the gasket was already installed and cut he couldn't refund it. He was saying how it's inappropriate for the installer to install it without checking the fit. Which I agree with, but it's probably more inappropriate to ship out the wrong gasket. In the end he said that it probably was the wrong gasket but that I would have to buy another one.
You can see the 2 cuts that had to be made to make it fit. Honestly, looks like a front windshield gasket but what do I know. There is 2 sections each about 6 inches long that had to be removed. Then he had to cut out some of the inner part of the gasket with a razor since he put it in and it was sticking too far out.
Yep...looks like you got two front gaskets. Sorry but I have to agree. The installer should have checked the gasket before ever messing with it. Just costs him a lot of time and you more money. There's no way I would ever cut one of those to try to make it work. Maybe check back with R and see if he will sell you another one at a discount since it was obviouly the wrong one. Good luck with it. Oh yeah...the car is looking GREAT!!!
you know Ray I agree with you and I don't have a problem with Ron not returning it, I feel it's appropriate and he definitely was very polite about it. So I just contacted Steele Rubber to see if they have it. They said they would ship it out tomorrow. I'm kinda in a rush since the car is my daily driver at this time. The total was $78 (got the little visor clips too, only $1.80 for those)
These stories really worry me. I also have the whole kit. I ordered it awhile back too. There are several parts in the kit that have come into question so I guess I better open the box soon so I can check them and get what I need coming... IF I see anything wrong. I better not hear any smart a** replies back either. I am not in any hurry, obviously since I havn't opened the box in a year, but when it's time to install something I need it then not six weeks that turns into 6 months.
I'm kinda glad I did this because I was about to drive up north to have Jay help me put it in and poor Jay would have gotten stuck with the work. You know the trunk one went in really well. Have the doors to do still, we'll see how that goes.
Man I better check mine also, I ordered front and back glass rubber a couple months ago. My glass is out waiting for the lady to install headliner which is scheduled for next month.
Sounds to me like the installer did know. He just tried to make it work, for what ever reason. I'm sure he felt like something was better than nothing till the correct one could be had. It's a daily driver. No way would I make the comment that the installer "should have checked", unless he didn't tell you to begin with. Who made the decision to modify the gaskett? What else could be done in the situation? Who knew you had the wrong one? The supplier should get you the correct one asap at your cost of the replacement in my opinion. Maybe with a price break, free shipping for sure.
Well that is the car life. I dont know how many times things like that have happened to me. Incorrect parts, wrong item in the box. You are all ready to install and BAM!! It makes you mad, but like I said, that is the car life, you gotta role with the punches. Your car is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Dan! When Jim (the installer) came out the first thing he asked me is to show him the parts and he has done a lot of the muscle cars before and said he definitely had done mavericks. I showed him the parts, he looks at the tags on the bags and he said we are good to go. He probably should have pulled it out of the bag and just looked at the size to make sure but what if the size was ok? the gasket still was not a rear windshield gasket so he still would have not been able to get it in without cutting it up. He did charge me for the rear install but said he'll come out and do it for free when I get the right part. $75 for the front and $75 for the rear. He was there from 10:30 until 1pm with another guy. And he told me for sure he would have to do it again if he were to cut it up and asked me whether I wanted to just return the gasket whole and have him come out another time or whether I wanted him to give it a shot, so definitely my decision to just go for it .
Were the bags not marked? mine were. There is a big difference between the front and rear gasket, the installer should have know better, you shouldn't have to cut anything to make it fit.....
the bags were marked correctly but the actual gasket that was in the bag that said Rear Window Gasket was not the right one.
Hoo Boy!! There's an AutoKrafter kit in transit to me right now. I'll be checking everything as soon as it arrives.
Hey Mo, sorry to here about the gasket but I really feel the installer should never have even attempted that. Marked right or wrong as soon as he put in on the glass he should have stopped and said this will not work at all. I mean he's the pro here that's his job. But after seeing what he did on the wind shield install what did you think not so bad after all to do or glad you had them do it and 75.00 is a good price buy the way good luck Brian.
