A mechanic stopped me at the post office and asked me yesterday if there is an adjustment for play in the power assist unit. He had once been told they had an adjustment screw.

What I am assuming is that he's referring to play at the ball fitting where the pittman arm connects. He said all other joints were tight.

That would be the control valve those always went on these cars... bout the only sure way to get rid of it is to replace it and that isnt one of the easyest thing to do either if its some times you can rebuild them but i found it alot easyer to just buy one its more expensive but alot easyer.

    P/S Adjustment

The adjustment youre looking for is found under the cap that faces the left side of the car on the p/s control valve. Take a screwdriver and take the two screws out, then grab a torque wrench. The Ford manual says to tighten the nut in there to 10 ft lbs then back it off 1/4 turn. If there is nothing else wrong with the unit it should be nice and tight after that, good luck!!!

    Or the steering box?

IF not the ball joints, he could have a need for adjustment in the steering box.

The adjustment I mentioned tightens the ball joint in the control valve that hooks to the pitman arm provided the valve is not broken internally, but any other rod ends or ball joints on the car are replacement only....

Thanks guys, I have referred the information over to the mechanic. I looked for the screws on a control valve under one of my parts cars today. Sure enough, under all the grease is a set of 2 big screws on a plate with a 3/4 inch round raised portion in the middle. I'm assuming the adjustment nut is under that raised portion.

(Yes, he is talking about the connection of the pittman arm to the control valve being loose. The rest of the linkage is tight).
