I would like to see if anyone has any pictures of cars with the turn signals and headlights hidden behind the grille. This topic has been touched a couple times in the grille threads, but I want to focus more intensely on this, and get some ideas of what setups may work and look nice. Someone posted a picture of a headlight with a small amber chunk in the bottom that worked as a turn signal, but then stated that it was difficult to see the turn signal when the headlights were on, so I am thinking maybe putting all three (headlight-turn signal-headlight) in a straight line across to separate the turn signal from the brighter headlights. Any other thoughts or pictures (mav, comet, or other) to help guide me in light selection and placement?
If there is a truck supply house or a big truckstop close by, there are all kind of led and regular lights, and all kinds of sizes. I know the TA and Flying J over in Baytown have good selection.....
I am adding lights for no other reason than functionality. I am not fond of the low turn signals hidden behind the valence (at least on my car they are, due to bent valence and signal brackets.). I also want better night vision with an extra set of headlights or at least a strong fog-type light. I added pony lights to my wife's mustang, and I run with the fog lights on my truck whenever i have the headlights on and I like the extra 2 lights lighting up the road and making me more visible to others in low light and foggy conditions.
Why not just do the H4 conversion? They reeallly bright white light, no auxillary switches/lights needed.
Just mocked up for now, held on with a wire tie and not sitting level. But I think I like it, and will cut the brackets up and mount them here. What do you guys think? Before I destroy the brackets and bolt them in here?
Hmmm. You think so? Here are other angles. I cannot get it any closer without cutting that sheet metal behind it, which I may do, to mounti it more flush to that sheet. The bulb housing is pretty deep, forcing it to stick out.
The flush mount is starting to sound pretty good. Then clean up the lenses really nice to make them crystal clear again. EDIT-- the more I look at it, the better the flush mount sounds, PLUS I could move them furrther out-board closer to the turn signals. Then it will look a LOT like this...
Now, my delimma is "do I cut up a perfectly good set of turn signal brackets, or buy aftermarkets with a similar shape and let someone who needs these have them?"
Maybe these? For sale on the forum... I would still have to do something with the wiring. Can you buy just the socket and bulbs from parts houses?
Those are the later model [74-up] lights, and yes, you can buy the bulb holders prewired. A lot of cars and trucks use the same bulb holder, I know for a fact that a 70's Chevy pickup uses them. Look in the HELP section at the parts store, or junkyard for used ones...
Any idea how thick they are from the flush mounting surface to the front of the lense? Trying to get them as far away from the grill as possible, to keep Frank happy. Franks friend Scoop
