i say flowmaster. its gonna be hard to find a good sounding one for a 170 6cyl. glasspacks would probably sound a bit too much like a honda

Once you get a little older, Flowmasters become a little too loud...

I'm only familiar with the sound of Flowmasters and glasspacks and I would take the Flowmaster over a glasspack any day.

i sure do like the sound of a good old gut muffler myself. but probly would be nasty sounding on a 6

so my vote is for a turbo style muffler like a dynomax super turbo

I've never heard an aftermarket exhaust on an older American straignt-6 or V-6 that didn't sound like some kind of tugboat.

I think muffler choice has more to do with what kind of sound you're looking for.....find a sound you like and see what kind of muffler that car is using.

Back in the day, it used to be a choice between Turbos, Hemis or Glasspacks....turbos gave you a deeper tone and mid-range rumble, Hemi's gave you that crisper metallic kind of tinkle that accentuated cam lope, and glasspacks were just plain loud and had that cool deceleration "pop"

Nowdays, with all the different makes, styles and sizes of mufflers, alternate inlet/outlet numbers and diameters, you can custom create just about any kind of exhaust tone/note you want.

Do a YouTube search on the model car/type of muffler you want and see how they sound.....when I was considering aftermarket mufflers for my P-71 Crown Vic, I simply searched "Crown Voctoria Flowmasters" or "Crown Victoria Magnaflow" etc. and there were dozens of vids for eavery search,....compare the different brands and set-ups with the ones that have the "sound" you want, and go from there.

Here's some I found with a "Ford 6 cyl exhaust" search

I'm thinking of going very basic on the exhaust for my 460 Galaxie,....

headers, with these bolted to them....

    that should do it

I can't really tell you anything about my exhaust other then the header is a single out from Mustangs Unlimited. The rest of the exhaust is off my '74 Grabber and was done by the previous owner of that car back in the early 80's. It Y's off into dual glass packs, which are pretty shot out after all these years.
