anything i need to know before i start?

    tomorow i plan on installing my transmission. (c4) the engine (302) is already in the car, and i am wondering if there are any tricks i need to know. this is my first time doing this so i have no experience to fall back on. i have a B&M floor shifter installed and the 6901's are installed. i am wondering about my torque converter. my plan is to leave it on the transmission and slide the entire thing up to the block. is this a good idea or should i bolt the converter on to the flywheel first and then slide in the input shaft?

    any advice you could give me would be great

    I've had a few
    Torque converter should stay on the trans. It probably will not be possible to fully seat it if you put it on the flex plate first. Make sure you get it seated all the way in the trans by putting slight pressure on it while slowly turning it.

    DO NOT mount on flex plate first torque convertor has to line up with splines and pump in trans. Put convertor in trans and spin while pushing inward and you will feel it slide into place as it clunks (for a lack of better words)

    great! is there a drain plug on the converter? a guy told me there was but i haven't seen one (also haven't looked very close) he is a chev guy so that might explain why. he struck me as a guy who had to know all the answers even tf he didnt know the answers!

    it will "clunk" 3 times when seated all the way...do you have the correct flexplate for your motor and the correct bellhousing for the flexplate?
    do you have the motor plate that goes between the motor and bellhousing?
    is the shift lever on the transmission pointing up or down?

    ...:huh:...

    yes to the flex plate yes for the bell housing (was a 250) yes to the motor plate shift lever is pointing up

    now all you need is a 1/2" drive extention, 36" long with a 5/8" wobble headed socket...:thumbs2:
    ...and of course...some help...
    are you doing this on the ground or on a lift?
    ...there are some safety issues to deal with either way...

    ha, on the ground with no help!
    the car is on ramps at the front and jack stands at the back. i have a floor jack with a piece of plywood on top. my plan is to take it very slow. what other concerns do i need to be aware of?

    will the ramps have the car high enough to even get the transmission under the car?
    then you have the added hight with it being on the jack/board...:yup:

    The bell housing may not fit between the headers if you have a cross-over pipe. You may have to loosen the bolts on the headers to get the C4 in place. Get some help - the C4 can be hard to handle on a floor jack.
    Never use the bell housing bolts to pull the transmission up to the engine. It should go up to the engine easily if the converter bolts are lined up with the holes in the flex plate. Once it is bolted up the engine should turn easily and the converter should move in the bolt hole free-play slightly. It should also be able to move forward and back slightly.
    Once installed with all the bolts tight and cooler lines connected you should add four quarts of type "F" fluid to the transmission be fore starting it. Then start the engine and let it idle in Park while you fill it to 1/2 way between the FULL and ADD marks on the dipstick.
