I love the spoiler. I mounted mine flush also. You can paint it later if you need to. I think the mustang spoilers are a nice 70's era touch. JMO
Thanks for all the comments on positioning. No controversy there, The trunk lid is marked to put the spoiler at the rear edge. Have a little rust repair to do under the lip then on to the hood,
I'm putting one on my mav as well. Ordered a '71 which is 3/4" longer. Hopefully it will work out as nice as yours.
71-73 are shorter also they look much better on our smaller cars.I mocked on up on mine about 2 weeks back tried both styles.

What, if anything, should be done to ensure the bare metal exposed by drilling the holes won't be a conduit for rust?
