just tried to move the mav for the first time yesterday and it just aint right put it in reverse rev up a little but it almost acted like it was slipping and just wont lock into gear.put it in drive and it started to scream so i shut it down and havnt touched it since.going back to it today to see what i can figure out .but i bet its the torqe converter im going to pull the tranny this weekend and put my stock converter in to see what happens.also i have a b&m street strip transmissiom in a box kit in it. john
DId you fill the transmission? Run it a bit at idle and then top it off? Check the simple and obvious stuff first, if you haven't already, before you start to dismantle the thing.
Is this a higher stall conv.? Seems like that iis what you`re describing. Gotta make sure it`s filled! Dont give up yet
yes i filled the trans ran it at idle then topped it off also it is a 2500 stall b&m converter that i bought brand new from summit the only thing i didnt do was fill the coverter with a couple of quarts of fluid before the install but my tranny guy said it should pump into the converter from the trans.
im just grasping at straws but are you sure that the shift linkage is properly adjusted? what is the history of the trans? is it new, rebuilt, or old?
bryant i had it rebuilt last year by a very good trans guy and im just wondering if i did something wrong when i installed it.when you say shift linkage i just installed a hurst promatic shifter do you think its not adjusted right.thats possible but i did have the car moving when i put it in reverse it just didnt seem right like it wasnt fully engageing into gear and when i put it into drive it didnt sound right either it started squeling.could it possibly be going inbetween the gears thats why its doesnt feel like its engaging all the way? i think i just answered my own question. thanks bryant and scoop and any one i missed john
Funny how that happens isn't it? Sometimes that's all it takes is talking to some one and you come up with your solution.
odds are you hurt the converter or pump when you installed the converter with no fluid.you gotta have a quart or 2 in it so it will "prime",trashed one like that.
man i hope not that would be one costly lesson hope its just the adjustment on the linkage if not i guess im buying another converter.
Disconnect the shifter and lock the transmission into park manually. Once your sure its in park you can start the car back up. Ford transmissions have the pumps in the transmission not the converter so starting it up without fluid in the converter should not be a problem. With an empty torque converter the transmission will empty out of fluid in about 15 seconds, as it all gets pumped into an empty torque converter. If you have already started the car for at least 30 seconds and the fluid level is the same as before then you have a problem with the transmission pump. As mentioned the shifter could be set wrong. The only other unlikey cause could be that the converter was not installed all the way in. You need to spin the converter 3 or 4 times as you install it so the converter snout plugs into the pump.
stick tranny in neutral with linkage disconnected, put shifter in neutral and adjust so pin slips right in tranny hole. Clip it, shift threw all gears couple times an recheck in neutral for freely moving pin in n out, readjust an check till it`s right. Have you ever run a higher stall converter? Makes tranny feel likes it "slipping" Squealing noise is throwing a wrench into this problem,,,
I hope you got it fixed with an easy fix, and not removing the trans. Since you had fluid in it, I am going to change my vote to mis-alligned shifter.
i wonder if the noise is the trans lever sitting between gears not all the way in one or the other.possible but i am going to do the neutral alignment you suggested.and now that i think about it today when i rolled the car out of the garage then back in i couldnt get iot to lock into park.cable adjustment is a must then i will go from there. thanks for all the input guys john P.S i will update on sunday what happens tomorrow is the honeydo list day.
this would be my guess also...been there and done that... ..and if you tear up the pump chances are it will get the converter... ......
you need that pauls trans symble with the spotlight of a transmission in the sky. somebody made one and posted it a year ago or so. i just cant find it.
