I am sure the radiator shop can set you up with a filter. Here is an example http://www.mustangsplus.com/xcart/home.php?cat=2163
I've done this not only on the '73 (which was also not cleaned well at the machine shop), but also on others in the past. It's not a beautiful or precise thing to build, but it works perfectly. I don't have any pictures, but I'll try to describe it. It's made from screen wire (yes the same stainless wire that you use on windows). Take several pieces of screen (multiple layers for good filtering), and roll them (like a cigar). I usually set it inside the inlet and let go to get the correct diameter. Staple it several times in several locations to keep it from unrolling. I used household staples to hold it together. Then, fold one end over itself and staple it a few times (to seal one end). This is your filter. Now slide it into the inlet and fold the edges over the outside of the intlet. You may need to trim and/or cut the screen to neatly fold it over. Then slip the hose over the top of it all and clamp it down. I make long filters that go several inches back into the inlet, that way it can hold more material before clogging. On my '73, I flushed the block before installing the freshly flushed radiator and filter. Then I cleaned the filter after each time I drove it (4 or 5 times) and got most of the material out. It's just been an occasional piece after that - which is why I leave it in and only check it once a year or so. My version looks like similar to this, just not as pretty I guess.
Its been a while since I've updated this. The Forum tells me so. The car is doing fine and running pretty well. It made the trip to Cruisin the coast in October. While there I ran into several problems including massive exhaust leaks from collector bolts falling out. the muffler hanger broke loose so I drove around for hours wondering what that rattling noise was. I burnt thru a plug wire housing causing it to ground out and miss while cruising down the highway. Overjetted the carb resulting in fowled plugs and a loss in gas mileage. I did get my overheating problem fixed and I had no issues with rust clogging the radiator. I never got around to installing the rear suspension last year so its on the books for this years project along with a RRS power rack and pinion settup I picked up from a fellow board member. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=58463 And due to the cold rain driving condition on the return leg of last years Cruisin the Coast, I'll also be installing a new climate control system as well. Then if the funds and time allows, I may make the leap to fuel injection. This years Cruise destination will be Pigeon Forge TN for the Pigeon Forge Grand Rod Run Sept 16-19 and the Run Thru The Hills Pro-Touring.com event that coinsides with the Rod Run. The competition contains a cruise thru the mountains, an Autocross, and some fun at the drag strip. It should be a blast.
Good to hear your coolant problem is fixed. Bummer to hear about the other problems... seems it takes a good couple hundred of miles to iron out things. I look forward to updates! BTW: if you ever want to do a wheel and tire change, let me know. I would love to take those off of your hands (helping to fund the swap). of course... monies permitting.
I was at the grand rod run last year. Miles and miles of cars. Only saw 3 mavericks though I would say atleast 200 camaros.
sounds good to me. Perhaps a Maverick Stampede is in order then. Note to self... drive couple hundred miles to find bugs before heading out on 1800 mile trip. LOL It will be another year or 2 before I swap out wheels but I'll add you to the list of interested parties. I cant wait to get this suspension and steering setup in. I'd like to do some autocrossing this year.
GrabberGT What shifter stick are you useing (obviously a Hurst). The one in my car has a big curve to it and is a little akward to bang through the gears.
I started the tear-down on the Mav last weekend. I woke up late one night and started thinking about my rack and pinion steering project and came to the conclusion that since I am going to have to pull the steering column and half my dash out to do this, I might as well go ahead and pull the entire dash out and fix the cowl and install the AC system. My cowl is a mess... and why do I have to pull the windshield out to get to such small screws holding the dash in place. The windshield repair guy will be here tomorrow to take the windshield out for me. Anyone have any ideas on other projects to do while I've got this apart. Oh, I'll also be rewiring the my inst. clusters as well. My wiring is a mess. So many unused plugs and wires. I hate snowballs.
I was curious about this. Can I replace the existing fuse block without replacing all the wiring? Mine is so incredibly rusted, Its hard to believe it still works.
Really like your theme..g-machine style. I'm thinking of going that direction on my 70 mav and enjoy your mod posts. I would like to run a set of Vintage Wheel Cobra style wheels with knockoffs, but they are very limited on their widths and offsets in the 17" wheel size. What back spacing you are running on your front 8" Hoopsters? The narrowest wheel Vintage Wheel offers in the style I want is an 8.5". Hoping I can get one that will fit. I'm also looking forward to your rack-and-pinion mod. Are you going power? Oh and I noticed the way you clearenced your wheel lips...nicely done. Did it buy you much more room? regards, Cal (A$$ deep in snow and bored!)
