Did you take those new 2 x 3 frame rails all the way back into the torque boxes/firewall or butt weld them to the original frame at the front of the towers? Those new rails look great!
Do you have any pictures of the welded connection points where the new frame rails met the torque boxes. Would love to see how you did it.
Only went as far as the strut tower but slid the 2x3 into the origional frame about 2" The rest was good so left it alone. I will say that the part of the frame I did cut off was dam heavy. I was suprised actually.
Just wondering.....could you take the towers completely out, and use a coil over or strut attached to the upper loop? I know it would be more upright than the stock spring and shock, and it looks as though it would give much more room for headers or a wider engine.
Ya you could but to go that far I dont think you would use stock stuff. I wouldnt think twice about dropping the front of it and using fox body struts and arms or even something like an allstar control arm though. That would be pretty easy. The issue would be the upper arm where it mounts in relation to the header location that is really the room problem. I am doing a T-bird after this one thats getting cut right at the fire wall and all new using the fox struts and arms. I will post a pic of what I come up with for you. Its getting a 588 a460 headed thing.
I gotcha. I forgot about how the upper A arms mounted. I can see where a strut front end would allow more room without the top A arm in the way.
did you ever see the front suspension on the 71 comet of the border bandit?? it was built by barry poole..it has a 429 cj in it...the car is located now in the windsor area..the front coils are tipped out so there is plenty of room for the 429..
That appeared to be a common approach on the old Maverick Super Stockers years ago. They simply stood the front springs straight up and then secured ,them at the top, just inside of the fender. Made just enough room for that monster 429. It's not like it had to ever handle again either - just go straight
That was my thinking on mounting a coil over to the strut tube. Not for a street car, a drag only....
Here is a picture of a "Race Only" Maverick with coil over setup. although I believe it is a tube chassis car. Not sure you could accomplish this with the stock towers unless you used a strut off a Mustang, but leaving the tower kind of defeats the purpose of getting weight off the front and you would be limited as far as front end travel and geometery................IMHO
