I don't have 500 miles yet. Getting close though. As soon as I get the nerve to crawl under the car, I'll change out the trans fluid & adjust the bands. Waiting for longer daylight after I get off work... Lets see, how long can I put this off?

What is the procedure for adjusting bands, w\ transmission in car? Is break-in oil normally used after rebuild? Install a drain plug anytime pan is removed a gud idea? Just curious.

The "break-in" oil is regular type "F" but when all the thrust washers and bushings are replaced with the new frictions there can be a bit of metal that sheds. A drain plug is not a good idea because you want to pull the pan to clean it out and clean the filter. Bands are adjusted as per the builders specs - allowing for the modifications to the valve body. the factory specs are to tighten the adjusting screws to 10 foot pounds and then back out 1 1/2 turns on the front and 2 1/2 on the rear but the specs used on my transmissions are a bit different.

    Matt,
after you get the transmission in place put as close to four quarts of ATF in it as you can before you start the engine. Then let it sit for 20 minutes. Start the engine and idle in park as you fill the the transmission to 1/2 way between the ADD and FULL marks. run it through the gears a few times and top the oil level off to the same place. Then put it on the ground and run it through the gears and check to make sure the level is still between the ADD and FULL marks. Take it for a drive and see how you like it. Remember that it has all new bushings and thrust washers and frictions. It is likely to be good and tight so no hot-rodding for the first 100 miles.
Keep all your records as listed in the maintenance log that came with your transmission. Between 100 and 500 miles you will want to change the oil to get all the stuff that wears off the new parts out of the oil. After that it can be run as hard as you want (or can afford the tickets that result).:yup:

    Matt,

I just read through your whole post here. Awesome progress. Your first pics were kinda sad and in the end it's looking good and sounds like it runs great! Many other people made this same comment, but I am totally impressed with your work ethic and the pride you take in your project. That's such a rare and terrific thing in a kid these days.

Terri is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with her Maverick project. Hopefully this summer we can get some good pics of you teaching her how to do good burnouts!

Thanks! So far so good! I took a valve cover off during the show and let Mike inspect it for me. he spotted a header bolt which was so loose it was bumped into the header. (causing the echo throughout the exhaust) all seems good since then. put in some sea foam and havn't had any problems. still gonna run some diesel through the crankcase next, then change the oil.
