Does anyone work on hoods?

i have a grabber hood that i want redone it in decent shape but the shops here in jacksonville said they wont touch it. so i was wondering can i ship it off to one of my fellow mmb. members and have them do it for a price.

 

What needs to be done? It may be cheaper to buy another one.

wow, that hoods solid, too bad for the dent, im sure it can be fixed. what type of shop? body shop?

 

I would do it for you but...Cost to truck freight it up here and back would make it not cost effective for you. It would be money better spent on a good one once it was done.

 

Thats gonna be hard to get out. From the pics it looks like there are kinks in several different directions. I bet some one will have to cut the under side of the hood out to get up in there and do alot of hammer and dolly work. If you were closer I'd tell you to bring it over and see what we could do.

 

Oh nevermind, I took a better look at some of the other pics. That thing has kinks all the way to the back of the hood. Its Fubar. Better off getting a new hood. A good body guy is gonna charge you way more than what one of Mavmans carbon fiber grabber hoods would cost.

 

That hood isn't bad.Get yourself a pr.of special pliers,and peel the outer skin off(Eastwood sells them,and made specially for this)Set the inner skeleton off to the side,and go to work with a hammer and dolly set.I did the same thing on my 66 mustang orig.hood.The bodyshop you took it to,must not be that good,if they don't want to mess with it.

 

By the time you try to straighten the wrinkles and take the dent out of the front the metal will be so stretched that it won't fit anymore. If you want to fix it you are going to need a new top skin - and a good used hood is going to be less expensive.

 

You and I must not be looking at the same hood! That thing has taken a good hit to crease and krinkle it in multiple areas all the way to the rear of the hood! I've done plenty of body and fabrication work and thats going to take ALOT of work.
A good body shop charges anywhere from 65-120 an hour. So your telling me a good body guy will fix that in under five hours? Not gonna happen. A good used hood can be found for 400-500 bux.

 

Agreed. The cost to fix that hood will be well above the cost of buying a good one. Even at 50 bucks an hour no way that hood can be fixed for 10 hours. Those creases will stretch the metal. Our collision guy that did some of my car could fix that skin but not on shop time. It takes a lot of skill and time once the metal is stretched. Hes a good friend of mine and we trade off labor for each others services me being a tech.
My stock hood had some pretty good dents and one crease on a body line. We really thought about whether to fix it or replace it. We fixed it only because it was rust free and doubted I could find a good one around here.
Keep in mind you have to be careful with the amount of filler on a hood. It flex and twists a lot.

 

I'm looking at the same hood.Sure it's going to take some work,but to me,not so much to justify,setting it off to the side,and spending $400-$500 for another one.Sorry,I don't see that many wrinkles,let alone deep enough to cause that much stretching of the metal.Now cutting into the under side to get to the inside of the skin,as you stated would be a waste of time,and SEVERLEY jack up the time and cost.Besides a hammer and dolly,some heat and some rags dipped in ice cold water will work wonders,on deformed/stretched metal.

 

Don't forget about the rust on the underside, rust is usually bigger than it appears, along with what looks to be structural damage as well, all that is going to add to the cost. Is it fixable?? Sure anything is fixable, it depends on the time and money you want to put into it.

 

after reading everyones opinnion i come up with its not worth repairing. i do have a heavy fiberglass grabber hood but i really want to stick with metal. i know grabber hoods are hard to come by but do any of you know where one is. $750 is probably the highest i will pay for one.
