My car came with the AC option but no compressor, likely to increase HP and reduce weight. I found this on Summit Racing and was wondering if it would work with our cars? What mounting brackets would I need for it? Anyone have some pictures of a functional AC unit in the Mav/Comet V8? My pulley system is all screwed up, probably because they pulled this out, and any pictures of the crankcase pulley (with and without AC) would be of particular help. Thanks a bunch!!

That should work, looks just like the factory piece. If you're going to go with the factory style compressor, yes by all means get the aluminum one. This is also available at most parts stores. Some people opt for a more modern Sanden type compressor, which is said to be more efficient.

This is my engine bay, with the factory type compressor:

It works fine. I'm using all factory stuff pulled from a '73 except for the aftermarket "cross-flow" condenser with a fan on it, the hoses I had made (~$80 at Carquest) and the receiver/dryer.

I don't have a picture of my crank pulley, but it is a 3-groove. You should be able to get all the brackets and the crank pulley from a junkyard, pretty much any old Ford with a 302 will have what you want. 351 stuff may work too, not certain though.

I would look at converting to a sandon compressor. PLaces like Vintage air and Classic Auto Air sell kits. The compressor is way more efficient than the old york style.

I don't know if I have the factory bracket. Either the PO or the PPO screwed up the belts; I'll post pictures when I can (it was raining like nobody's business yesterday) but the belt to I believe the alternator isn't even in a groove. It works but 1) I want AC back, even if it costs HP, and 2) I want my motor running back in its stock position (hence the need for pictures). We were trying to decipher the order of the belts and where the AC went on a 73; the Dude is going to a couple junkyards today while I'm at work to hopefully find something (along with a few tranny linkages) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the links though, I hadn't realized aftermarket compressors were so available. I'd been told to upgrade but thought I'd need all the original parts before I could.

On a stock 3-groove crank pulley, the AC goes on the outermost groove and that's the only thing on it.

How strange, I'm pretty certain my V8's crank pulley is only a 2-groove, yet there's a belt running on the flat surface where the timing marks are (or were, most of them have worn off). It doesn't look too secure and is something we're trying to find asap; we tried finding some new parts online yesterday but had no luck so we're crossing our fingers for a junkyard find. The Dude isn't having much luck so far today though as many of the area 'yards are closed Mondays.

71Gold: I'd love any part numbers! At the very least I can see what my options are. :)

Dave: I'll check out those links, thanks. Maybe I can find a bracket somewhere if it's not on my car; I didn't remember seeing anything like that but then again I'm not looking at it right now and will check when I get home.

Thanks for the help guys. My area in the summertime is miserably hot, regularly above 100, and to have a commuter car without AC is something I've done before and PROMISED myself I'd never do again. It's not as important right now as some safety things (bushings, brakes, tranny/engine problems etc) but I want to have it within the next few months if it won't break my bank. :)

So yesterday we found 74 and 70 Mavs at the local pick/pull. Managed to get the AC "radiator" (not the technical term for it lol) but no decent mounting brackets. We also found a Cleveland in a 72 Ranchero the Dude is lusting after which had AC brackets but we don't know if they'd fit as we have nothing to compare to. He's going back today to get the ducting as I seem to have "misplaced" all of mine. Both 'yard Mavs were i6 and one had what may have been the bracket but as mine is a V8 we didn't think it would work (?).

Still no luck finding a crankcase pulley. Mine is indeed a 2-groove but the PO ran a belt over the harmonic balancer instead. Somebody seriously frankensteined this baby together. We've got a lot of irons in the fire with this car but we both want the pulley situation fixed in case something happens. That belt is what's running the fan though so we need it for the time being. Anyone know a part number for those crankcase wheels?

I hate that I got ripped off on this V8. Lots of new parts but runs like crap for the most part and leaks like a sieve. I can't bear to think how much I paid, seeing as I got my 70 i6 for a steal. Karmic payback I guess...

Yuppers. In the pouring rain too (ugh, the last few days have been terrible!). ;) The Dude wants to see what if anything else he can glean off the I6's out there but they looked pretty well picked over. I may end up stealing that gas tank from the 74 for my 73, provided it fits; the tank is also still in that 2-door 70 there but we already have one in perfect condition in our 70 so... *shrug*

Hm! I may indeed want to take a look! Someone took out most of the AC stuff from my 73 (we're focusing on that one for now as I need a daily driver and this one at least runs, mostly), all except the dryer, so I'm having to rebuild it completely. I'll PM my info, I'd like to see what you have available. :D

We were thinking of heading up to Sac this weekend to see what they had. Sucks that there's little to be had but glad we didn't make a wasted trip, thanks for the intel!

Now to just figure out those belts and pulleys... Hopefully it'll be nicer today and I can post pics because I find it hysterical (in the sarcastic sense...okay and maybe a bit of ha-ha too).
