The build date is between the plate and tailhousing. The first letter is the month, 2nd number is the day, 3rd number is the year and the last number is what shift it was made.
    F53 2 = June 5th 1963 2nd shift.

Found it! Thanks. This trans came out of a 68 mustang, but it has one more digit than the one pictured. The # is: F285 2 What would the extra # mean?

With the tag being gone,is there any other way to tell if it's a close or a wide ratio trans?

As far as I know, 68 Mustangs did not come from the factory with T10s. Someone must have put it in there. The toploader was designed to replace the T10

Close ratio has no groove on input shaft...Wide ratio has one groove.

Thank You:tiphat: Is one better than the other? I take it,the close ratio will shift a little better?

I did some reading up on them, and from what I found they were dropped in favor of Fords own toploader in 66 I believe.I picked this one up from an ol'timer who used to race back in the 50's thru the early 70's.He had it in his 68 mustang, and pulled it out to put an auto in for his daughter.Got the trans/shifter/rods,2 good flywheels,2 bells,2 forks, and 2 good complete clutch setups. All for $250. Now to hunt down a zbar.I was looking for a real top loader, but this should do ok.

I found 1 groove thats cut into,(going around)the splines on the input shaft.Looks like the kind of groove that would take a snap ring.Is that it?
Thanks guys for all the help!
