Member on here referred me to a guy that has done some great upholstery work for him on his seats etc..., he looked at my car today to do the headliner and said he can do it without pulling the front and rear glass and guarantees the job, he ordered the material and is sewing it himself, all for $250 total. Has anyone had it done without pulling the glass and was it OK? __________________
When I put my headliner in I did it without pulling the back glass . I`d be willing to bet that it would have turned out a little better or at least been a little easier if I would have just pulled the window . Then again I don`t do it fore a living either .
Honestly....there is no way I would put in a headliner without pulling the glass. The headliner needs to wrap around the metal part of the car around the window frames.
Well if I go this route where is the best place to buy new rubber for the glass and a set of Mach 1 seat covers.
I bought my headliner off of eBay from a Mustang house-$59.95. I got the back glass gasket from MaverickConnection-very slow shipping, but he said so upfront so it wasn't really a big deal with me, but would be if you are in a hurry. I bought the windsheild gasket from AutoKrafters. Or maybe it was the other way around, anyway, one came from AK and the other came from MC...
The guy doing the work seems really cool, Jamaican with the big bonnett on back of his head, beard with rubberband in it and Bob Marley posters on the wall , this is true but actually he was referred to me by Earl Branham on here and has done some really nice upholstry work at a very resonable price for him. Anyway he said he would rather sew his own because the premade headliners dont allow much extra to work with and that he likes extra to work with and knows the quality of his work...I dont know just rather go with a guy with referals and a good reputation.
I've put 15-20 headliners in over the years myself. There is no way in hell I would attemt to do it with the glass in, partly because of what Craig told you, the rest just to have working room to get the wrinkles out. I hate wrinkles in a headliner.
I had a custom head liner made. He used the original as the template. It installed and looks great without taking the window out. He specialized in older cars. I wouldn't take a windshield out and reisntall it myself. Thats just my thought...
say it looks great when he finishes... now 3 months later the...windsheild gasket cracks...will there be enough...headliner lip...to pull over the opening when installing the new gasket? ...how much extra do you need to tuck it under the gasket? ......
You need quite a bit! That is my problem with my headliner. On the passenger side, by the B pillar, the installer cut it too short, and now it is shrinking, as they all do, and pulling off of the gutter. It needs to wrap around and the weatherstrip attached on top of it. Looks bad when it pulls away.
