    EDIT: Now with pictures! http://picasaweb.google.com/David.Blodgett

I'm taking a trip sometime in the next week to a yard and it got me to thinking about what I need to take with me. I know I've gone before and missed a part or two because I didn't have the tools to get something off a car. Has this ever happened to you? What kind of things to you think of when you're at the junk yard and say "Gee, I wish I had a _____!". (Tools only please, they don't serve cold beer at this yard as far as I'm aware. :p )

What kinds of things are on your check list for a junk yard day?

They have beer at the ones here. Lol

I usually take the trim remover tools, just in case i find some nice trim.

Also a can of PB blaster and WD40.

    Steering wheel puller.

Also this might sound weird but i also take a set of metric sockets.... i've seen a lot of people replace the standard bolts in these old cars with metric pieces

A 12/18V drill battery pack(to check if any electrical component is working).

    have fun :thumbs2:

Everyone knows you can work on a Maverick with just a vice grip a crescent wrench and a screwdriver of each straight and phillips head.........seriously tho take those and pliers, pry bar, assorted sockets and a ratchet, wrenches in 3/8,7/16,1/2,9/16,5/8....a 4 way lug wrench.
Oh and make sure the sockets are 6 point.....for those tough nuts n bolts.
Thats all I can think of right now....maybe others can add to it.

    Set of Standard/Metric sockets/ratchet/extensions etc.
    1 phillips/ 1 flathead
    Common size wrenches
    Trim removal tools
    Pliers/Wire Cutters
Tools of Destruction-BFH/Pry bar/PB Break Free
    Big breaker bar
Ingenuity-You can improvise a lot of tools in a junkyard. For example, I once broke my 18 ratchet trying to remove some leaf springs, so I found a factory lug wrench in the trunk of a car and hammered it onto the end of a smaller ratchet and had enough torque to finish the job.

I would also take a digital camera, and take lots of pictures. How many times have we spotted parts later in pictures, that we were not looking for originally?

    Have fun.

I take a pretty loaded tool kit, and throw in my deep sockets for good measure.

I have most everything that other have mentioned.

One very good tool to have in your kit for Mavs is a 3/8ths nutdriver. If you need to get armrests out of the car, this is the tool. Jam a 3/8ths socket in there, you will never see it again without ripping the armrest to shreds.

I don't know whether to be excited or disappointed. I'm so confused. There are at least 25-30 mavericks in that yard. (more in the wall-o-cars) Every stinking one of those cars has been there for so long they are all stripped and riddled with rust.

I got a black grille with standard lights. I busted grill with the crossbar lights and maverick emblem, and a blue AC panel cover all for $50. Not much else there.

I'm going back this week to grab another item or two I think. Here are the parts on my maybe list:
    - Grabber end caps (spoiler already gone)
    - Power brake booster, master, and shock tower brace. (quoted at $60)
    - Spare headlight trim rings
    - Bobcat taillights (found a pitted pair)

I have two questions. Do you think the taillights would turn out okay if I cleaned them up and sprayed them semi flat black? I have a pic on my phone I will upload later, don't have my data cable with me. Is it worth pulling the stock power booster or would I be better off with a later smaller booster? Should I get the shock tower brace either way?

    Without further adieu... http://picasaweb.google.com/David.Blodgett/June262010SalvageYardPics#

the taillight bezels look great in flat black, especially if you have a blackened out tail panel.

All the boosters were the same size, so there is no "smaller later booster". Unless you mean like one off a Ranger/GEO or something , then yes i'd use a later booster.

But to be honest you dont really need power brakes in these cars, im in the process of removing mine.

And yes get the tower bracket, they are rare to find still intact. I dont think you'll have any problem selling it.

That field is just sad to look at :(
