    If they weren't 28 spline, what were they? 28 were the most common with 31 used on performance vehicles and some trucks. 31 spline axles are stronger. Why do you want 28 if 31 are available? 9" were used from the late 50's-up.

    The 70 Maverick I just bought yesterday has a 9" in it. :rolleyes:
    Supposedly has 3.70 gears with a spool too. Got complete car for $500. :)

    and as for why i want 28 spline is because i bought a 9'' housing from maverick maniac and i use the axles from my stock 8'' on the 9'' housing

    8" and 9" use the same axle as long as we are talking 28 spline

    this may sound dumb, but really wants the difference between 8 and 9 if the axles are the same?
    im trying to decide rather to keep my 8 or go with a 9 for my build.

    The 9" housing is stronger as well as all the guts. You don't need a 9" IMO if you're;
    not going to race on slicks all the time
    not making over 400 hp
    not running a manual trans.

    X2 on not needing a 9" on a street car. The tires will smoke before the 8" will break. A 9" uses more horsepower too.

    Actually a good percentage of the big Ford - Mercury - Lincolns had 9-3/8" rears.

    Are you looking for just the center section ? Or one with a posi unit ? The first is easy to find. The second? Good luck.

    i got a 3rd member from a 72 enconoline van 100 the axles looked like 31 spline but they were 28 spline it is a 3.25-1 ratio

    and pick n pull has a 1/3'rd off sale and i got it for $62 bucks out the door:dance:

    Maybe you should have grabbed the whole thing. Those 9's have the differential offset to the passenger side and can be narrowed by just doing the driver's side to fit a car. Had a friend who did this for a 70 Torino.

    Easy way to tell by looking at the flange. The axle on the left is a 28 spline and has an oval hole...31 spline on the right has counter sunk holes.
