Not sure when THEY did, but I never did. It's a 302. :)

The Fox chassis debuted in '78 with the Fairmont and the '78 King Cobra Mustangs had a 5.0 decal. That's the first time I recall seeing it used.

I think the first official Ford reference to "5.0" was the 5.0 decal found on each side of the scoop on the 78 King Cobra. Though I think most people I know refer to roller cammed small blocks as a 5.0 and the flat tappet ones as 302s. But the 5.0 trend really started catching on after 1982. Ford at that point and beyond pretty much put the 5.0 badge on any Mustang that had a 302 in it.

About the same time they started calling a 289-302 a Windsor...although both were all produced in the Cleveland engine plant. The 351 Windsor is the only engine made in Windsor.

I always thought the"5.0" moniker was more of a marketing thing... You know how, at the time, Ford made the Mustang more "European" cuz as we all know, everything "Euro" is better and classier than anything made here in America.

    Is it fuel injected?

Mid 80's it could either be roller ready block, or already has a roller cam. Could have flat top pistons, could have hypertecs, could have e7 heads or could have emmision garage heads.

Best bet is the numbers by the starter to know what block it is.

To me, 5.0 = roller cam. Everything else is a 302.
