i took the trim off the rear windshield today and this is what i found iv never welded before or done body work what should i do
Are you talking about the bad window gasket or the rust underneath it. Nothing to do about the gasket but to replace it. Then fix the rust after you pull the window out to replace it clint
That one is a bummer, but easy enough to fix. First remove the glass. Do this by cutting through the rubber with a razor knife. Window seals turn hard as rocks with age and cannot be saved on these cars so don't even attempt to remove the glass with the seal intact or you will break it. Once the glass is out you will need to take the headliner out too as it will catch fire once the welding begins. Once that is all out you will have a decent idea how much work you will have.
I can cut a rust free patch from a a parts car for $25.00 plus shipping. PM me if interested. Rick Forney, TX
man, that sounds like a lot of work and im not sure i have the skill or know how to do it by myself, so if anyone in GA wants to help that would be awesome...
Getting the glass out is easy once you cut the seal. Seals are available and it is best (IMHO) to let a glass company reinstall the windows when the repairs have been made. But until you get the glass out, you will not know for sure what you need to do to fix the rust until you can see what is under those old seals and dumdum putty.
I think I'm gonna have to hold off on for another week or two, unless someone wants to help me with the welding. I'm taking my driving test in the mav next week and I don't think the person from the DMV would appreciate no rear windshield.
No need to cut and weld a patch. You can use POR-15 epoxy putty to repair the rust. Here is one link showing how. I'm sure Google is will show more links. http://www.por15.com/CHEVY_HP_FloorPanKit.asp
I also found rust under the window trim and I was thinking about using rust bullet because it doesn't require prep work(and it's cheaper) but would por-15 work better, what do you guys think?
as Jeff said use...POR-15 epoxy putty...first...then the... rust bullet... good luck with your driving test...:Handshake where are you in Ga... Frank...
