I am thinking the factory 5.0 shorty headers may work, that or some blockhugger headers. I found some longtubes designed for the 351w pinto swap but there is no way I will pay $600 for headers

you have to buy headers for a car that have rear sump oil pans, like t-birds, or 1980´s mustangs i think. i installed a mustang II sistem in my 1969 mustang, from (http://www.streetrodengineering.com/ )but i will install a 390 FE. with the shorties you should have no troubles.

Maybe I've said this before, but why not build your own. It's fun and will only cost you for the flanges and tubing.....................you can tack weld it, then take them out and have some do the MIG welding if you are not able to.....................just a thought. If you were a little closer I would love to help you. It takes a little time, but is well worth the effort in the long run.
Personally shorty heads just don't make the HP that longtube do, and the 5.0 headers are just totally restrictive, especially on a healthy 351w.

    IMHO

Really? You've gone to the trouble of grafting a Mustang II suspension to the car and you won't spring for real headers? :hmmm:

    Just for reference.....the headers and X-pipe on my '07 were $1400. :thumbs2:

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Why spend all that money on the M2 then slap on a set of 1.5 stang headers? It defeats the whole purpose. I think foxbody 351 swap headers might work, or ask the guys on a M2 forum i bet they know. But at the least run 1.75" tubes.

    Jarred,

You don't have to have access to a tubing bender. Just buy bends from MAC, Summitt or Jegs and make sure they are mandrel bent. I think any of these or even SpeedWay Motors sells a starter kit. Get the exhaust flange from any of these, then start out by tacking one pipe at a time. You will need to cut some of the pipe as your go, but you should have no problem since the shock towers will be gone............at least on the passanger side. Then work around the the steering shaft and you are home free. It would be interesting to try the stagered ID pipe size.
The guys at SPD in Rancho Cordova, CA are absolute wizards at making headers and do quite a few of the NASCAR SS exhaust systems which cost upwards of $8/10k each. I had them mandrel bend the pipes and TIG weld the last pair I made...............not cheap............but the welds were almost invisible. Not suggesting you have a set made, but look at the photo section of their website and watch the 32 Ford with the Viper motor as they build the headers....................it does take some time, but you can build a set yourself...............just buy the pipe and start building. Pick the easiest side first to hone your skills, then tackle the hard side. It is well worth the effort and you can fine tune the headers to your motor, not buy off the shelf that is a compromise for your motor and RPM. If you want you can trailer the car to "Sunny California" and in a weekend we will have it done!
Here is a picture of the headers I did with SPD. They helped the flathead motor lay down 316HP @ 5200RPM on the dyno.
If this old man can make a set, so can you!

i wouldnt waste time with shorty headers. buy or build long tubes or just use a big set of factory manifolds. shorties are a waste of money for no flow over stock

I think shorties are definately better than manifolds but not as good as longtubes. I have a set of shorties that will be close. I figure I will worry about headers when the time comes. lol I don't want to hurt my last 2 brain cells

    Mojo,

The motor was in a 31 Model A Coupe, in the first picture. Sold the Coupe less motor and trans last year and it is now in Finland. They will put a Buick Nail Head in it.
The 289ci blown flathead will be going into kind of nostalgia altered like the one pictured only it will have the flathead and C4 trans. It should do the 1/4 in about 10.4 at around 131mph........................at least I am hoping for that or better.
