I'm just curious to if the maverick box has an GM Saginaw internals or Ford integral internals. Some mustangs had gm saginaw interals in the 70s.. If this is the case for the maverick box, I thinking it'd be real possible to send my 72 mav box to lee performance and get a really sweet fast ratio 12.7:1 ratio box for around 650 or so! so if anyone knows which style internals the mav box uses post up
damn, I was hoping they used gm so I could send it to LEE :-( http://www.themustangshop.com/steerbox.cfm
hmm...did some digging around. Seems this guy (Brian Nerat) makes a firewall plate to mount a quick ratio steering box into a ford http://demoderbypitstop.com/contact.html it's 40bucks http://demoderbypitstop.com/catalog_2.html now the dilemma is the pitman arm/ idler arm and what not
Steering box adapter From:tom parrott (tom.cuttingedge@yahoo.com)Sent:Mon 10/18/10 8:03 MikeTo get the steering adapter plate to work should just be a matter of having the right bolt patterns. We could probably send you one to check it out and then you could mail it back to us. If you can tell us how much to move our holes and give us bolt sizes, we can make one for you for $40 Thanks, Kyle
i wouldnt want to move the steering box any closer to the motor. its already really close to the headers. now if your all stock then that wouldnt be as much of a concern but then if your all stock then why would you want to change the steering box. just keep in mind the cause and effect factor.
http://demoderbypitstop.com/images/ster3.jpg Doesnt look like it'd actually move the steering box anywhere if any..And I'm sure the gm lee 670 boxes are alot smaller then the ford box besides mounting the gm box to the firewall with this adapter, looks like the only thing you'd need to do is heatup and perhaps bend the pitman arm a lil.
The pitman arm is tempered steel. If you heat it...it will loose the temper and that’s not a good thing. The last thing you want is pitman arm failure.
Yup According to a old article in a 1986 Mustang mag, the recirculating ball gear boxes our cars use are GM saginaw units. I think that's what I remember. I'll look up the article this weekend.
please do Think i'm going to shoot lee an email to see if he can add his rack and pinion like performance in our boxes
