Having never rebuilt a 250 before, where does everyone buy their rebuild kits? I was shocked at the rebuild kit prices. V8's are a lot cheaper. Classic Inline 6 is about $819 for a short block rebuild and Rock Auto is about $675. Is there any place cheaper or do I just bite the bullet.
I didn't know it would be that expensive…you’re using fewer parts than it would take to rebuild a V8. Should’ve rebuilt it 30 years ago and it would had been cheaper.
Don, rather than buying a kit have you priced the parts individually? Also look at places that don't necessarily focus on performance sixes. The quotes from the two you mention do not surprise me - its like buying light switches for your Mustang from a Mustang only parts house - they are always more expensive than the local stores.
I haven't priced the parts individually yet. I was thinking a kit should be cheaper. I thought Rock Auto was one of the cheaper places online. I'll be doing it shortly. I know I should have done it 30 years ago. There's lots of things I should have done 30 years ago. And lots of things I did that I shouldn't have.
I guess it also depends on what kind of kit you want. Theres a re ring kit: it includes the rings, gaskets and bearings. They also offer a master kit thats more but it has the pistons, cam and lifters plus everything in the re ring kit.
Dave, I agree. 50 years ago I was just a teenager that knew it all. Somewhere along the way I lost most of my smarts.
