I'm amazed that the bottom of the rad support would hold the weight to begin with....it's only thin metal....
I was watching South Park recently. Captain Hindsight should be visiting you soon. He will have all the answers [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cY_oKve-bH0&feature=related"]YouTube - Captain Hindsight[/nomedia]
It was jacked under the front crossmember Dave. It slipped off and crushed the rad support. Done this a few times over the years in our shop. I think all us techs have done this in one form or another. Hell we took out an intercooler on a Cummins truck once. That was bad, and real expensive. Thank god for warranty.
So how did that happen? Were you jacked up on the strut rod crossmember at first and were pushing the car back. Then jack hit rock/crack and stopped and car kept going and slipped off the jack and core support landed on the jack. Or were you jacked up on the core support? First scenerio, I can feel your pain. Second scenerio, bet you never do that again. Years ago after I had my car painted I was jacking up the rear end to do something. I went to slide in the jackstand under the frame infront of the front leaf spring mount. car wasn't quite high enough so I left the jack stand right under the rocker panel and went to jack up another couple inches to get it under the frame. One pump on the jack and the 9" rear housing rolls off the jack, pushing it back towards me, and the car falls to the ground. Remember where I left that jackstand? yep, rocker panel crushed in about 3". Its still like that today, havent had a chance to have it fixed.
Jack was under the crossmember. He told me after he should have had the jack lower. This wouldnt have happened if the comet had shoes on
Dave, that radiator support is twice as strong as the subframe on newer cars! When you jack them up you only place the jack in a designated area or you will crush the "frame"! I made that mistake on a Mitsubishi Galant! I was jacking up this car and I'm jacking and the car is not moving! I thought I had placed the jack on a sturdy structure, but I was wrong! Luckily I quit before real damage was done! Anyway our cars are WAY sturdier that the crap offered today!
yep I got the parts and two or three of them .still did not want to replace a good core support the only rust was under the battery that was going to be an easy fix ..Oh well s,,t happens
