I was cutting up the parts car I had left over and was about to toss the rear end in my metal pile, since it was a 4 lug. I thought just for fun I will check and see if it has the original tag since my comet's is missing, I will steal the tag from the mav rearend. I noticed the tag said 2L79. I started trying to remember if the L stood for locking or if I was just making an excuse to take the 3rd member out. Anyhow I took the 3rd member out and sure enough its a ford locking rearend.

Im pretty sure its the original rearend as I know the guy I bought it from. He was the original owner and even gave me the original 1972 title for the car. I didnt think mavericks or comets came with posi units, could this be an option he asked for?

Parts Catalog says the 70-71 could be a Traction Loc. You should see WFS-B (small bearing) or WFS-C (medium bearing) on the tag. Both have a 3.00 ratio. Your '72 must be an early production to get the left over '71 parts.(?) And your right...Mavericks or any Ford didn't come with a Posi unit, only General Motors got them. :yup:

    Tag says DSO-D2DA-CA second line says 2L79 8 514A

    Gears say FORD D2 - 420A

WFS is not listed on the tag or the gears

The "L" does not mean "locking".

I have never seen a Maverick with a locking rear diff from the factory. Would love to see a picture.

No Maverick came with a trak-loc. The gears are 2.79's. If it is a trac-loc, it is not stock and I would doubt the 2.79's are still in it. Like Craig said, please post a picture of the unit.:)

Its very odd that the car is a 1972 and both the ring gear and tag are both 72. I just checked the ring gear and it is a 2.79. Im not trying to debate that mavericks come with trac-lok or not but the bolts on the 3rd member and axle housing looked factory and matched everything else under the car, basically looked untouched. I guess the only way to know for sure is to order the marty report.

Is it possible that someone ordered this as an option?

Thanks for the picture. It looks like the "L" does in fact stand for locking. I would have to say, I didn't think one could order a Maverick with a locking diff.

The only way to really confirm it is if you found the build sheet for the car. I don't know if a Marti report would tell you or not.

Is the DSO on your doorjam sticker a 4 digit code? I'm guessing it might be.

What a great find - my guess is it is a special order. The build sheet would be awesome to find, check under the seats, tucked in the springs.

So it would be like a ford equivalent to a COPO car?

Well it depends on how you define "equivalent," but, well kinda yes. :D

    This is pretty cool!
