Well, my family is from Indiana and I've done my share of driving in this crap. But roads of this nature are pretty much non existent up that way. Very steep grades for miles at a time, multiple hair pin turns, etc. It's wild enough on a dry, sunny day in a new car, much less in the snow in a 40 year old car when the road hasn't been touched by the DOT yet. When you go from the road feeling a bit slick, but still relatively easy to keep under control at a slow and steady pace, to hitting something that feels like your car is on marbles and becomes totally unresponsive to braking or steering on a 12% grade with a very sharp corner at the bottom, I don't think it matters where you're from, you're not going to save it. Note that there are 3 lanes of road in the background behind the car in that pic... Scratch that. You can't see them. I could barely stand there to take that pic, the snow was frozen solid right there and it was a pretty steep hill. Was a pretty nerve racking ride the rest of the way down the mountain, still had about 5 more miles to go at that point. Just glad the thing will still get me to work this week. Dreading having to repeat the story 5,000 times to all my coworkers though. lol
We can drive in the snow fine...but driving on ice is just going for a ride. Jamie, Glad to here you're ok
Glad its only the car thats bent up. Born and bred driving in that crap around here but it dont matter on ice. Nothing you can do. Been there and its an awful helpless feeling knowing your just along for the ride and hope the bang at the end isnt to hard.
Glad you're ok. And I agree with Darren, living in WA I know that snow is one thing, but once you hit ice all you can do is hold on for the ride until you've got traction again. The steering wheel and brakes are just there to make you feel like you can do something.
Damn, damn, damn! Sorry for your loss, glad you're ok. You can't let this be the end of the car though. Else that means I win.
Ouch! Glad your okay, I've lived in the North most of my life and Maverick's & Comet's were never that good of drivers in the snow then or now, as for driving on ice or black ice Helpless is the word I almost took out the whole male family bloodline coming back from Wendover, Nevada a few months ago. In a front wheel drive car did a 360 then a 180 and then some it actually looked like I knew what I was doing. I know it would have torn them too but ya gotta love them Big Bumpers.
Not as bad as your last one...... All day today I had to drive at least 2" of ice, it was sloppy yesterday, but froze solid overnight. I guess we just get use to it, Drifting is nothing really new. There is nothing like sliding a full sized GMC Savana sideways going around a bend in the road
Car was coming to it's end regardless. Dec. 22nd was and still is the last day I plan to drive it to work, unless I run into some unforeseen problem getting the engine stuffed back in my truck this weekend. Will be putting detailed pics up on facebook of all the problem areas this body has some time soon.
Glad you're ok....wow look at that weather!! A blizzard!! Where's Al Gore with his global warming when ya need him! Still a great looking car!! I'm a Southern California native and I've only ever seen it snow like three times that I can remember. Mean_Maverick that was just plain a mean thing to say..don't kick a man when he's down.. ice is ice dude.
David (Mean_Maverick) was just kidding. Most of GA didn't get snow like that, that pic was taken on Blood Mountain at around 3,000 foot elevation. We do get snow like that about a day or two out of the year though, usually in Feb. or March. My next Mav will look the same, except hopefully a hell of a lot nicer. Sucks, because I was planning to stop right there and get a neat snow pic of the car, but as fate would have it, it was a stop to get a pic of the damage instead.
