I have rust where the fender bolts on to the body, apron area? I guess this piece is not easily replaced. It is pushing the fender mounting area up, and I'm trying to fix all this before painting. What should I do?
Cut out the bad rust. Sand blast the rest. Weld in a patch panel. I have had to do this to all the Mavericks I have restored.
Duane, When are you coming to see me? I have all the patch panels you need. Or, I'll take your rust bucket as a trade-in on a good body. Rick
I will be working near the house tomorrow. Come out I-20 East to Forney third exit, Helms Trail. I will meet you at the Shell gas station. Call when on your way. Rick 214-673-8086
My car had a few pinholes in that area on the pass side. We humm'd and haw'd over it then decided to cut a little square out and patch it.
mine is identical, why do they rust there? im cutting out the pieces off my parts car and welding it in like others mentioned. fairly simple.
The layers of steel overlap each other but arent sealed. The get all the road splash from the wheel. This was one of the first places to rot out up here in the salt belt. It would lift the edge of the fender up and bend the lip the rust was so thick. All the Mavs I had as a teenager in the 80's were totally rotted at all 4 of those joins.
Ah thats nothin. Up here they would rot all the way down to that first bolt in the shock tower. (that was in the 1980's)Took a big patch to fix it.
Ok, I'll just weld in some replacement. I was afraid it was done like that for strength purposes. If a section of sheet will do it, that's what I'll do! Thanks!!!
So after its welded up, would some seam sealer on both sides be sufficient to keep it from rusting again?
After a visit to Rick's house today, I see what it's supposed to look like! It's just thin stuff spot welded together, where mine rusted it was about 1/4" thick, I thought there was more to it. Simple fix, and I will used some sealer (silicone, since that's what's plentiful here) when I'm done.
I soaked mine with rust check after repair. It doesnt see rain if possible so its not a concern anymore for my car.
have any of you ditched the inner fender *plastic* splash guard? mine was rough and i hadn't planned on putting it back on. didnt know if that will cause more harm
