A little background on the project. I bought this car for $100 and it was an absolute basketcase. Just interior, lots of missing parts, lots of rust. Perfect candidate to hack up and rebuild from the ground up. Latest update: I've assembled and mocked up the IRS (minus the center section). I have it hanging in there on ratcheting tie downs. It's really close to where it will end up being welded in. I want to move it up probably another 2 inches or so, to give the suspension more room to move. I have it at close to full compression right now. And now the pics. This is the with the IRS mocked up and the suspension compressed to where I would like it to ride. I've put on one of the 17" bullit wheels to see how close I was to having it in the right place. Close up of the wheel IRS assembly Front looking back down the trans tunnel at the IRS. The garage doesn't have much room, so I couldn't get a good pic of the back of the car. More pics are at my cardomain site (link in sig) if you want to see how I got where I am.
Is that a Cobra rear end? What's the width with the wheels, compared to the stock dimensions? Very Nice!
Sounds like this is going to be a cool project My own 69.5 looked identical to your's when I got it. Originally painted the same gold and if you look at my photos we're both identically nuts
Yes, it is an '03 cobra rear. The wheels are stock 17x8 bullits. I think stock cobras are 17x9. I didn't want to go any bigger than an 8 inch wheel for fitment reasons. I also got a pretty good deal on these.
Thank you very much! I took a look at your pics. You are making much better progress that I am. I've been whittling away at this thing for 5 years now. I new I was nuts getting into it. I just decided that I wanted to have a one of a kind car, and this also pays homage to my Uncle and Dad who used to race a 69.5 with a boss 302 swap. So, this is my "boss" 281. I'm going for a pro-touring/road race setup like the boss 302 cars were originally intended.
Then I would highly recommend a Watts Linkage set up for your rear - mine is getting it I watch the Austrailian V8 Super Car Series on TV and they love the Watts Linkage down under for those left and right hand turns - mininumized rear steer
Watts link? No, I'm just going to use coil overs on the independant rear. I think a watts link to hold up the control arms would be a little too Rube Goldberg.
Any progress / pics? Interesting.... what size tire you planning on running on those 8"rims.... I would consider a project like this in the future... would like to know if you can get at least 275s on 2nd choice would be a 3 link/watts on a live axle....
Parts came in this christmas! Tubular coil-over control arms are from Rod and Custom, along with the standard height sprindles. The caliper brackets are from Speedway motorsports. So far, everything is as advertised, and the fit and finish appears to be fairly good as well. My only issue was that the caliper bracket on the driver side did not align well with the spindle. I think this is most likely a bracket problem. A little grinding fixed it right up. Not pictured are the GM calipers, 11" Granada rotors, and bearings from Speedway as well. They'll go on when I button it up a bit more. Everything is just hand tight right now.
