I bought the Bronco thinking it was a government rig and I think I was right. It had 92k on the odometer but I bet it racked up a ton of hours on the nuclear site idling. You can hardly tell it has lifters let alone that they're roller! Looks like I'll take it down and freshen it up. Still worth what I paid though!
That's just nasty! looks like a roller to me. you can barely make out the retainer for the lifter guides.
That one needs a complete disassembly and dipped to clean it out. I would make sure all of the oil galleys are cleaned out. Good luck. With that much sludge, you could be looking at sustancial wear also.
Yuck. That ranks up there with some of the worse ones I've seen. Hows the cylinder wear??? Ring ridge???
It is pretty gross, I have only taken the intake off at this point, if it has much wear it'll get stroked!
The only time I've seen deposits worse than that outside of a junkyard was in the 235k mile 4.3 V6 that I pulled from my old Bravada to swap in a V8. Any idea what kind of oil and filter were used on it?
Looks like Quaker State to me......I had one in a ford truck that was that bad, actually plugged up the return holes and filled up the valve cover with oil one day and started sucking it all thru the PCV, smoking...well fogging like an old mosquito truck, turns out the previous owner had put in a dip stick that was too short...way too much oil in the engine for years, prolly had 9 quarts in it.
It's currently running a Napa gold filter but who knows what oil. I think it was a Hanford Patrol vehicle judging by the way it was optioned and there is evidence of it having communications equipment. That equates to many hours of idle time, heat in the winter and A/C in the summer while they watch gates and fence lines.
You stole my post. LOL. First thought was Quaker State. Seen it sludge up many engines over the years. Only thing I've seen that takes out a 318.
