Lately i have been thinking about giving my car a semi rat rod theme, not gonna try and make it rusty and put dents in it on purpose just want an unfinished project muscle car look, sumthin different.....maybe a matte base color(hot rod flatz) with some gray primer here and there new chrome mirrors billete grill stuff like that.
I don't think a Maverick would qualify as ratrod material....it would just look like a ragged Maverick. Ratrods are typically old junky slapped together 20s, 30s and 40s garbage with little design or planning. Personally I hate ratrods. Most are a hidious mixture of crap that don't go together and appear unsafe.
i like the style its a break from the mainstream classic but i do agree that some i would never drive lol. like this one
[QUOTE Most are a hidious mixture of crap that don't go together and appear unsafe.[/QUOTE] That's why they have their own class at events! I say go for it. It's your car do with it what you want. There's plenty of "traditional" Mavericks out there with some pretty weird stuff attached. From Wikipedia: The rat rod is the visualization of the idea of function over form. Rat rods are meant to be driven, not shown off. Sometimes the customization will include using spare parts, or parts from another car altogether.
import rat http://jonsibal.com/blog/2008/04/rough-sx/ im sure i could accomplish the rat look with tha mav, it sure would standout
YIPES!! both of the cars in the above pictures should have warning signs on them to watch out for flying parts! Maybe a big orange and yellow triangle. A work in progress can be done tastefully without looking like it's a public hazard on the hwy. There's a flat black challenger (new gen) running around here that just looks awesome and partially finished at times, but done right. JMHO
lol im aiming to make my mav look like a work in progress, I've been thinking about a primer gray paint job then onse it cures wet sand it to smooth it out, then add a billet grille, dark tint, new chrome mirrors, lowered stance and the alloy 16inch rims i got. thats the plan
Without trying, I sorta got the "Rat Rod" look. I am glad someone came up with a term that gives my car a "genre' to fit into, other than "ugly and unfinished".
I really like this for a low buck "retro-cool" look. Not too ratty though. Note the 302 spelling on the hood.
The bad thing is that "rat rod" had become such a generic term...it can be dangerous. For example, if you tell a guy that owns a survivor 32 Ford roadster with all of the patina (worth around $30,000 or more) that he has a rat rod...you might get punched in the nose!
If it's a genuine 40s or 50s build with history....yes. At least that (that one is just an example). Much more if it's a 3 window coupe. There have been 32 Ford 3 window barn finds sell for as much as $65,000-$80,000.
