NHRA rules cut the nitro by 15% and shortened the track by 320 feet but they just go faster. New record for a 1000 ft is now 327.03 mph. :bananaman
chrismann said that they are now making 60 psi with the blowers now and another driver said they are making 10,000 hp now. last year they would say 7000 hp. the year before they were saying 6000 hp. if nhra takes away more nitro then they will make more boost to compensate.
They have always been able to run faster. I always heard tire compound was the most limiting factor, then aerodynamics.
It's the same problem they had with the Alcohol Guys they took away boost and the guys just had to spin them faster to get it back and now they are going to the moon and blowing them up. Same thing is happening to the fuel guys. They are making more boost and spinning them harder. And if you watched the race in Pomona you would have noticed how many engine explosions they had. NHRA is Dumb, they keep shooting themselves in the foot, over and over again.
part of the problem is the teams with big money would run the motors harder because they could aford to replace them. where the smaller teams wouldnt run as hard because they couldnt aford the risk. nhra this year implemented a new oil down policy that will penalize you by taking away points. so if the big money teams run the motors on the ragged edge all the time and have oil downs they will lose points and thats whats most important to them. alot of teams used there 1 free oil down last weekend so they will learn quickly how not to blow up the motors. this is the best rule that nhra has made in along time. it actualy should help the smaller budget teams compete. the shorter track is because of some of the tracks on the tour have too short of a shut down area for cars going 330mph in the 1/4. that is what killed scotty cannon. i dont have any problem watching the 1000 ft racing. its still the same awsome experience live.
That would be Scott Kalitta that was killed and Scott was knocked out with his foot on the throttle, ran off the end of the track and hit a crane with a TV camera on it. It wouldn't have mattered if the track was 5 miles long. If you notice most of the cars are now stopping on the track and they have to be pushed off. the 1000' deal was another attempt to slow them down. The only way to slow them down is restrict the super charger and the fuel.
What the heck is happening to racing? It all started out with two cars - the fastest wins. It isn't just NHRA either - NASCAR is doing the same thing. I think its time to start a new racing association - the only rules would be for safety and the rest would be like bracket racing. Cars will race other cars in the same time catagory - run what ya brung!
Agreed 110%. NHRA and Nascar expecially Nascar are runnning a real tight program now. I cant watch Nascar anymore. Its just a big IROC race as far as I am concerned. Hopefully the drag racing doesnt get as boring as Nascar. BUMP drafting. Give me a break. Why dont they just weld 2 cars together and start a new race series. I'm sure the Nascar fans will jump all over me on this one but its just not the same anymore. For me its gone downhill since Earnhardt was lost. So far NHRA is still a hoot to watch. I hope it stays that way.
the problem with slowing them down so they can run a 1/4 mile again is that they will be running alot slower times. that doenst make for good press. people are use to seeing 3 sec times for the dragsters and low 4s for the funny cars. if they slow them down and go back to the 1/4 the dragsters will be in the 4s and the funny cars may be able to get in to the 4s. people want to see new speed and et records set not watch cars go slower than they have in the last 15 years.
Thats true. Good point. I just get tired of blown motors and the cars blowing the tires off. it's become "who can make it to the finish line with out breaking" not who's got the fastest car. Thats why I love bracket racing.
Well if thats the case just run 1/8th mile hell they could set all kinds of new records then. But who whats to see that, and they would just lean on them harder and blow them up again. When the switched to 1000' Don Prudhomme was asked about it and he said "All we will do now if set the wick to 1000' instead of 1320' " We are now at the point where they are blowing more engines than they did running a 1/4 mile and almost as fast. Schumacher ran 327 MPH on the weekend. I have a T Shirt that say " Change the cars not the track, Bring back the 1320" And thats exactly how I feel. This is why I love PRO STOCK, SUPER STOCK , STOCK and COMP Elliminator.
Everyone has thir own ideas on what to do. Some are good and some .... well it's there thoughts and you can't take it away from them. I like what the Professor said last year about the differance between back then and now. "it used to take a driver to get the car down the track, you actually had to drive it but now with all the advances in computor controls all the driver has to do is mash the pedal and at the other end, pull the chute. Then he added, and now they don't even have to pull the chute. Referring to the electronic chute release. Let's face it, those of us that remember the "good old days" will have to let go of those days or store them in our favorable memories locker and learn to accept the new ways. I would be among the first ones to support the old ways if somebody was to organize a new association. I would almost want to bet that anyone who was there, back when would agree that the feeling a spectator got then compared to now is worlds apart. Even though I still enjoy the competition today it seems as though the only thing you get out of it is the excitement of seeing how fast they can go and did they break something getting there. If this was a perfect world then I would say that a new association would best be run by the, meant with all due respect, old time racers.
