ford's toploader was fitted to the 250. A lot of people will recommend the T-5 which is what I have in my comet with a 302.

I like the T5 idea, especially since fuel economy is the issue. The good thing is, any T5 would be strong enough behind a 6cyl, unless you're beating on it.

The 250 uses the same bell housings that the 302 does - any transmission for the 302 will work behind the 250.

Your best bet is to find a Mustang GT, mine came out of an 85. That said most fox body's had them. They also came in the thunderbirds of that same era.

T-bird turbo coupe 83-88, all Mustangs to 85-93, V6 Mustang 94-current, tho 04 and up have a bolt on flange with a large damper(no slip yoke), some Merkur XR4Ti's (some of those had a German SROD that is not the same and are hard to find parts for, I'd stay away just in case). The cheapest and most available are probably the 94 and up V6 Mustang plus the gearing might actually work better for the 250ci(y)

for $55, I would buy 2 or more, just in case.

It really is hard to tell without driving the car. Transmissions in general are difficult at best to determine condition without disassembling and inspecting the guts. Obvious things would be a loose input shaft, burnt fluid and leaks, notchy feeling when turning the input shaft. You should be able to smoothly turn the input shaft while shifting into each gear.

Get the 91, if it is behind a 302 it is a World Class T5. The easiest way to tell them apart is when you look at the front of the tranny you will see a casting plug that is about 2 1/2 inches in Diameter. if it looks like it is installed with the cup out it is a normal T5. If it has the flat portion out and no cup it is a World Class T5. And at $55 get all you can afford to get if they are behind a V8.

You are going to need probably at least $300 in clutch pedal related parts to do this swap. This doesn't count needing a flywheel, and a clutch. This is not a "cheap" swap. I recommend you stay with the C4.

yes..I did not want to say it first .. but I think stay with the c-4 your car.. you would hardly notice any fuel economy increases, as it is so light to begin with..plus there are some other tuning features that differ between the standard and automatic cars..( distributor power curve based on shift points just to mention one..) and It just not worth the extra effort involved ..in my opinion anyway..good luck in what ever you decide to do.

I've been wanting to do the swap for a while now and my transmission is already screwed up ( doesn't shift into 3rd until around 6k rmps).

yes it sounds worn out ..maybe a band adjustment left in it ..try shifting it manually for a couple of days.( start out in 1 then shift through the gears as you go carfull not to over rev. and you don't have to down shift slowing down.. sometimes the torque converter aquires an air lock .. for reasons I do not know..I only know they happen..it may start shifting normally ..maybe not , its worth a try ..if not, in my opinion I would go and get another c-4 ..I know thats not what you want to hear.. but I am just trying to help you save money , knuckles, and a lot of swearing . It could be a simple re-re. or a possible freakin nightmare on your street type of senario.. running around trying to match things up throwing 20 dollar bills over your shoulder as you go ..lol..good luck.
