So I just got this car a little over a month ago. On the ride home (in the rain) we noticed little drops of water running down out of the headliner. Since then we have covered the car in the rain. Last week we went to our friend that installs windshields, he took the top trim off and put some silicone in it. He said that if it still leaks then let him know and he will order a new windshield and install it CORRECTLY, sealing it on both the outside AND the inside unlike the last person that installed it. It rained the other day - real bad. I had trouble with the window right before I parked it before the storm... so I am not entirely sure if maybe I left the window open a crack and the water came from there OR if the windshield is still leaking. Either way, after the storm, I noticed the front mat (heavy duty plastic) had water on it. I lifted it up and the carpet was SOAKED! Today I lifted the carpet up and see rusty floorboards. Not Fred Flintstone floor boards, but they are on their way. They are still pretty solid but the amount of rust scares me. Any suggestions? For now I stuffed newspaper and an old t-shirt between the foam padding and the metal. It looks like it is going to rain again so I figure this will soak up the water for now and if anything else collects, I can just get back in there and remove it all. Remove the seats and carpet and clean the floor good then apply Rust Bullet or Por15. Replace any loose seam sealer with fresh seam sealer. Dump a gallon of water in the cowl vent in front of the windshield and see if any water shows up on the floor. Could be the windshield is not leaking now but the cowl is rusted and leaking. Here's hoping your floor stays dry.
good luck finding it out...my floor boards get soaked everytime it rains. Im still trying to figure out where the water is getting through at.
Cowl vents are probably leaking...as said in a previous post...pour water in the vents just in front of the windshield and look for water leaking under the dash inside the car. If there is then that's the problem. Hope not!
Dry rot I have some big cracks in the seal around my windshield. Every time it rained I would have an inch of water in the floor. I picked up some flow able sealant from Advanced and it dried it right up. I'm still gonna replace the windshield gasket, but I don't have to do it immediately.
Maybe its not silicone... whatever they use in a tube... it was black. I think I found out why this car has had 6 owners in 4 years. What a shame that I already dumped around $3,000 into it already and lost my beautiful Comet over it.
I traded my PERFECT Comet for this car that originally had a "few drops" of oil and/or tranny fluid leak out "once in a while." Week 1: a) replaced rear main seal & gasket b) brand new tires c) oil change Week 2: a) replaced dry-rot hoses and clamps on transmission lines b) line then leaked out of where it goes into transmission. wrapped it with teflon tape, tightened, finally stopped leaking c) quick fix: re-seal upper corner of windshield on passenger side Week 3: anti-freeze leaking. replaced thermostat and water pump Week 4: a) bodywork on driver's side b) paint lower half of car Week 5: a) passenger side carpet completely saturated with water b) peeled up carpet and see moderate rust, light rot Week 6: a) checked driver's side under carpet. Very disappointed to find that side wet as well. Looks like a rotten cowl! Very upset about the amount of time and money I am having to put into this car. At first glance and first drive it seemed to be more functional than it ended up being. Now I am waiting to hear back to see how much a new windshield will be. My windshield is fine but I was told that I would have to get a brand new windshield because they come with the seals/gaskets - apparently you can't buy these separately? I do not have a garage to work on this in. I'll have to pray to the muscle car gods that it stops raining in NY for a good week or two so we can work on this. I'll have to learn how to weld.... get access to tools... although this may be fun at some point, this is NOT what I signed up for! This is DRAINING my bank account! poooooo! Only 3 more weeks of school and then I'll have to work on it when I'm not working crazy hours.

THANK YOU!!! My boyfriend just took the trim out and called to tell me that the cowl is all painted - no rot... so I guess its the windshield. Between the $80 weather strip and new trim, I'll be spending roughly $250.... then hopefully if that stops the leak then I'll move onto repairing the floor pans. I don't know what I would do without the help of everyone here. You guys are great! Mel
You can also buy a windshield gasket from Steele Rubber Products. When I tried to order one from AutoKrafters they were on back order. The one at Steele Rubber was about $15 more, but available. My glass dude was was able to get my old one off and the windshield out without breaking it. (no problem). I still decided to replace it because it was frosted really bad. Had him also replace the rear window gasket while he was at it (AutoKrafters).
