I need to repaint the rear side panels in my Mav. They were originally green, then painted black. The black paint is quite messed up now. Any suggestions as to what paint to use would be best, and the best way to prep the parts. Robert

Always good to try ebay first for some decent panels to work with...that being said, I jotted you down a quick how to..

Step 1. You'll have to thoroughly clean the panel with a good cleaner that will git rid of any waxy and dirty substances (i.e amour all)

Step 2. Gently scuff the surface. Depending on how much dead paint is over the original panel, you could just lightly go over it with a fine scotchbrite (not the household kind) to give the paint a good "tooth" or you may have to sand with some fine grit to blend in here and there.

Step 3. Prep with (and this is many opinion on the board) SEM brand cleaners and plastic paint prep. Use only as directed. This will leave the panel in a condition with a great base for the dye to adhere to.

Step 4. Dye with SEM plastic dye. I'm using the word dye here because this stuff is not like the cheaper "paint" stuff on the autozone shelf. It will last and not flake off if prepped correctly.

I'm sure you'll have more members chime in but thats a quick run down.

Take your panels to a 25¢ car wash, that's not 25¢ anymore, and use high pressure water to knock off the old paint

The SEM dye/paint is the best. did all my panels with it along with the arm rests and they look great with no problems..i didn't use the cleaner they sell though due to i had some wipes from painting my last vehicle.

If the paint is too stubborn for this, hit it with some easy off (oven cleaner) first, let it soak for 15-30 minutes, then blast it with the washer. Has always worked for me, and its never attacked the plastic.

Thanks for all the info, so where do I find this SEM dye paint? Also, what shade of black do I use, flat, matte, satin, or semi gloss? I want to match the door panels as close as I can.

Satin is the closest to the correct sheen, but if your car has the original black paint on the doors, it might have some metallic mixed in.
