my boss is giving me a 3 speed overdrive from a monarch but it has no shifter. do they use the same one as a toploader 4 speed? this one is for my 66 fairlane. the next on will be for the mav.

YOu may be able to use the same shifter but you will need a different attachment plate.

From what I understand you have to have a install kit that's no longer avalible to be able to use a regular 4 spd shifter.

Either this "guy" has had a previous run-in with Paul and he's just found a new way to get revenge, or he's a complete a$$! Nearly every thread is a bash of some sort.:cry::cry:

I didn't pick that screen name because it looked cool, ya' know. The Ford "3+1" transmission can use the same shifter but will need a different installation kit. You'll need to call Hurst. Go to this page.....

    http://www.hurst-shifters.com/s.nl/c.723089/sc.26/category.7326/.f

....and click on "4 speed manual transmission ID chart." Page 2 will show you the 3+1 transmission ID number (435). Find the transmissin ID that your current shifter came from then call Hurst and see if they have the kit you'll need. At the most you'll need a different mounting adapter along with shifter rods. The way Hurst is selling/packaging/marketing manual transmission stuff these days the only way to get an answer is to call them directly. Everything else is heresay.

Is that an SROD or the cast iron version that was used from 77 to 79? They have external linkage like early topoaders. Only the cast version can use a standard shifter like other 4 spd toploaders. If it's an SROD you need the ford shifter that's made for that trans. There are no aftermarket shifters for the SROD. Sources for the SROD are 80-83 mustangs, 80 and up Broncos and ford trucks from about 80 to about 89~approx. Granada/Monarch years unknown. Good luck.

That's quite the description of the trans. Doesn't tell me much. Is the 'bump' located on the right side about where the 3rd gear is on the inside?Got any numbers or a pic?

It is the cast iron case. You can make the adapter plate from a piece of 3/8" aluminum or steel. You have to do some work to make sure the shifter is mounted at the correct angle and placed where it will go through the opening. It is not hard but it will take some careful work.

The bump is on the passenger side of the case and will have orion cast on the driver side

sorry no pics. the boss is slow at getting things out of storage. he thinks he may still have the stock shifter but may take a while for him to come up with it. i still want to get a hurst shifter for it. i will post photos when i get it. yes it is the toploader imposter.
