I'm just starting a restoration of a 74 grabber maverick with a 302 and 3 speed. The car is in great shape but will be getting new rear quarters. My uncle saved the car from the crusher and it's very complete. He always said he was going to restore it and just paint the top the same as the orange (red ginger?). I like that idea as I once replaced the vinyl top on my 75 cougar (460 and all, what a sled) and never really liked the reproduction. What do you guys think? Paint or new vinyl, that is, if the vinyl is even available. Maybe that should be the first question, is that top really even available for the 74 out there?
The vinyl top is available, I would have to say if you like vinyl tops and the car will be under cover then go for it... Im putting the black vinyl top back on my grabber mostly because it will be garaged most of the time, and will be a nice offset to the bright red paint... The marti report says it was built with a full black vinyl top... It's your choice in the end though....
mine came with vinyl top an it started cracking, so im gonna pull it off and just paint the roof instead of replacing it. But its up to you in the end
Yes, the Orange, is just a solid Orange, I have the paint code somewhere... I'd like to do my car with the metallic, and even have the stripes cut in a metallic.....But I may just do the car 100% stock, since it's one of the rarer color/trim combos of any year Maverick. There were only 198 White with Orange deluxe (bench seat) interior Mavericks built in 1974.
Another option is to have the top sprayed with bedliner. I happened to see one done like that this week when I went to pick up some parts. It looks good, and it has the same texture as the vinyl without all the upkeep.
How were you able to determine your's was one of 198? Mine is the orange on white with the orange buckets and the 3 speed. I'd like to know how many of those were built.
The top on mine was starting to fade (dark green) so I painted it with a vinyl paint made by SEM. It came out great. Mine was in good shape otherwise and I like it. I also changed the color to satin black which looks much better.
Coolvettes, don't know what part of Texas you're in, but Rick Brooks had this done to his Comet. He is in Forney, RWBrooks on this forum. If you're close send him a PM, worth going to his place just to see all the parts/cars
i would put a vinyl top on if the roof of the car is not flat otherwise i would paint it. it is your car so it is up to you
