Alright so heres a rundown on my 72 Comet. Had a family member pick the car up for me while I was deployed to Afghanistan. Car has rusted through rear quarters and torn up fenders. Drivers side glass was busted out before I got the car. Engine: 200 CID 3 spd manual on the floor Bucket seats Black Vynal Top Might have LDO option - I will check more into it later. First off I am just happy the car runs and it runs well. Its really loud because it has no muffler but whatever, I will get to it. Its not my daily driver just a fun project. The car as you will see in the pictures below is Brown with Black Vynal top. Soon to be Red with same top. I am doing the whole $50 rustoleum paint job on the whole car just to see how I can get it to turn out. Here is the progress so far. (The videos I watched said try it on something small first so I chose the hood since it was already primer/rust.) Step 1: Took a belt sander to the hood and removed all surface rust and old primer/paint. Step 2: Cleaned hood up nice with mineral spirits and tack cloth. Step 3: Put on 3 coats of rustoleum Bare metal Primer (white) Wet sanding in between each coat.(took 2 days - 6 hrs between coats) Step 4: Prepped hood/primer for paint. Wet sanded, mineral spirits and then Tack cloth to remove debree. Step 5: Painted Gloss Sunrise Red with Rustoleum oil based protective enamel. Two coats on it so far - planning on doing 5 total. 6 hrs between coat on this one aswell so getting a 3rd coat in a single day isnt likely. Pic below is as it sits with 3 coats primer, 2 coats red. Looks decent but im sure final product will be much better. (oh and yes I am using small foam paint rollers)
Looks pretty gud. It looks a lot better than when u started. Anxious to see how the Rust-o-leum turns out. I need to do my dash and considering all methods of application. Using rollers saves time spent doing a lot of masking. I like the idea. I guess it's like anything u paint; the end results are mostly dictated by the prep work. Gud luck.
Thank you and yes rollers make it so masking is minimal. I was going to mask the fenders and cowl area but decided not to when I realized I could just open my hood and have gaps all the way around to coat these areas worry free. Guess it truly wouldnt matter if I got paint in those areas since they will eventually be red anyways, just dont wanna deal with extra mess later.
