My 72 Grabber weighs 2910 with a full tank without me in it. I have a 9" and subframe connectors. Still have iron Windsor heads, and 4 wheel drum brakes. Removed AC (30 LBS???) and switched from a C-4 to a T-5 (80 LBS???) Also have very light 15x8" rims. Aluminum intake (20 LBS???). Just guessing at the weight savings :)

I have a 72 with AC, EFI 5.0l, T5, a small amount of heat reflective dynomat in the front floors and trans tunnel, a trunk mounted optima battery and I weigh 2990lbs without me in it. Most of the sheet metal and frame work is in tact. An aluminum block will save about 100lb. Stock AC box? A VintageAir unit could save a little more. Seats are very heavy too.

Having just finished my car and trying to make it as light as possible, the thing that shocked me the most was how heavy the doors are.....Those bars in there weigh a ton

I am pretty surprised how evenly balanced your car is. To just be within a couple percentage points front to back is really good. I would expect these cars to be very nose-heavy as they came stock.

My Comet with 351W, alum. intake, (same weight as 302), PS, Heat, and AC equipment stripped out of it, full interior, disc brakes, weighed in at around 2840. This was on a scale at the metal recycling plant, so it is probably close.

You asked early in this thread about the weight difference between an 8" and 9" inch rear axle. I just did a fast read through all 4 pages, and unless I skimmed over it, did not see anyone answer that.

I have been lead to believe that a 9" could be 40 lbs heavier than the same width 8".

If anyone one here would know for sure, it would be Bryant.

I would be interested in finding out a comparative weight on an 8.8, since they are so common now. I seem to have read they are lighter than a 9.

    69GT,

    I would bet a 302 aluminum intake is a 30-35 lbs savings.

On my 351W, mine chopped off 40 lbs, which coincidentally, is the weight difference between a stock 351 and 302. I was concerned about added nose weight when I did my swap.

Cool. I wasn't sure on the manifold weights. I weighed the car with the C4 and 8" and first aluminum intake and it weighed 2840 with less than a full tank without me in it. Added weight with sub-frame connectors and a 9" but took weight out with the installation of the T-5 to get to 2910 full tank.

I can tell you the 8.8 is a heavy rear with disc id say its probly a few pounds heavier then a 9"

My car weighs 2810 without me and 12 gallons of fuel , tubular front end, aluminum calipers,no back seat, radio, race wheels on the front and steelies amd slicks on the rear ,no heater etc. I know I added weight with the sound deadning and front seats (air bag) and the 8.8 rear and the motor has aluminum heads, intake, waterpump mini starter etc and the trans is pretty light. One day ill cut these door bars out lol. I race at 3160lbs with me

You guys are all lighter then me. Try putting in an AOD, a 9" rear, Finished trunk with amp racks sub box and electronics, power windows, 7 way power lincoln seats.

I was 3250 wihtout me in it and only about 1/4 tank of gas. and thats with aluminum heads and intake. Dropping a couple hundred pounds wont make much of a difference unless you need every tenth of a second you can get and are drag racing it. Build it the way you want it to drive and dont worry about it is what i did.

The truck(Explorer 8.8) is at least as heavy as a 9". The car and ranger 2wd 8.8 is comparable to an 8" without the brakes depending on the source. I have an 8.8 Explorer rear and a crown vic 8.8 and I have decided to use the crown vic sourced one due to the weight and the ability to use my existing 8" ends on the housing.

I think it helps that I've added weight to the middle and rear of the car. The 9" rear, torque arm system, and the subframe bracing all add up.

I've about given up on the weight issue. She's a healthy 3350 and thats all I have to say about it. I might jump on carbon fiber hood if it were to fall into my lap but really, there is not much more Im willing to change. I like it the way it is.

ditto. I'd really like to see this car.

Just looked at your build thread...did I see an exposed spot that showed the console made from plywood or MDF covered in carpet? It looks great and I wouldn't change it either but you might want to try using it as a pattern to remake in aluminum, fiberglass, or plastic sheets and finishing off in paint. Probably ditch 30 lbs.

Edit - also didn't notice an pics of starter. You running an old school starter with separate solenoid or one of the mini starters with the solenoid on the side of the starter? The minis are 7-8 lbs lighter.

New and improved console is on the drawing board. This one is pegboard and 1x2's and might weigh 30 lbs total. Yes I have since moved from the old school starter to a mini starter.

I had issues with my aluminum flywheel so Im not going that route. So overall I've lost 8 lbs from the starter and 5 from the rear coilovers (went to aluminum ones) but i've added 10 lbs to my spare tire of a gut.
