My floor pans are rotted out: Driver's side Passenger's side Is it to big to patch using this method?: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=35513
You need to poke around with a screwdriver or pick hammer and see how far the rust has gone...Looks like you have more there than you can see (typical) Floor pans can be had from donor cars or old mustang re popped pans will work with some trimming. Fiberglass isnt the way to go where your feet sit and seats mount. Structural integrity is important here. Good luck!!! Also: Check your cowels for leaks (they rot out) Pour some water, a cup full should do. in the vent at the base of the windshield and see if it comes in under the dash in the outer corners. If so, you have rotten cowels which killed your floor pans. Bad windshield weather stripping will cause this sort of floor pan damage too.
That's kinda what I figured . cCan I just get a big sheet of steel and cut out where it's rusted and weld it up? Or do they have to shaped a specific way?
Yes. And it is best to cut out as much, if not all, of the rusted old metal. If that is too much, then you should chemically stop the rust using POR15 or a similar product. As far as shaping, they do not need to be perfect. I would recommend using a bead roller, so the new panels do not "pop" when you step on them. That is what happened the first time I repaired mine. If it makes you feel better, check out my fun: http://mmb.maverick.to/showpost.php?p=736042&postcount=119; which was caused by this: http://mmb.maverick.to/showpost.php?p=708858&postcount=104
It's hard to tell, but it looks like it's the torque boxes, that are rotten. If it is, it's best to cut them out and replace them with the new replacements that are available.
Looking at the rest of the pictures in your gallery, I would look for another car. You are in Texas. You are probably tripping over rust free Mavericks down there!! If I can find rust free cars up here in the rust belt....you can find one down there.
Yep and I was a car nut at that age. My buddies brother had a green 75 302 Mav. when I moved here to HAmilton. Man was it rusty for 6 years old. HAd holes in the doors and quarters. I remember it well and its one wheel peels. Its the reason I bought my first MAv at 15. A few years later my good friend pulled into my drive with a 73 MAv with a 351 and 3 speed on the floor. Somehow Mavs have always been around me. Bit off topic but yes these cars were rotten in 1980. Sometimes I cant believe I have one today thats near 40 years old yet they rotted out around here while the interior still had the new car smell.LOL. That rust does look nasty but I bet the rest of the car is salvageable so it may be worth the fix. By the time our floors up here looked like that the rest of the car was scrap.
Strangely enough any other mavericks/comets that I find a deal falls through, i.e the seller never contacts me again to go look at it, or he sells it to someone else without telling me and I come off looking like a jerk cuz I'm calling him 2 weeks later asking him what's up. I'm resuming my search though I'm gonna try a larger search area, because fixing rust is not in my budget nor skill set currently. Thanks for all the info guys :Handshake
Looks rough, but not that bad. I would try and get doner floors but The floors can be done easily with an anvil and sheet some metal, thats how I do most of mine , just takes time
Yep, that looks like a parts car to me. Bummer. If you're apprehensive about doing floors, I would say junk it, because you're torque boxes are shot too and that is not a fun repair to make.
RustyMav1974 I saw the gallery and the car is rough as a whole but watch through this guys video's. He does some great bodywork and can be a good guide. Just pick you up a small 80-90 amp mig welder, some body tools and have at your car
