If the roof is rotted through in large areas and its structural integrity is compromised.
It should be replaced (not rocket science but must be done carefully) If it only has a few holes around the trim in various locations (sorta swiss cheese holes) these can be repaired with small patches. If you need to make many patches for the roof bigger than 2X2 inches...Its most likely done...Good luck!!!

Has about 15 little holes about 1"x1" inches. If they are patch would I have to treat the roof under the liner(inside car)?

    Jerry,

My 72 Comet roof was bad. I had a shop repair the roof with a layer a=of fiberglass and spray bedliner. Cost me $350.00.

It is a great idea if you have small holes to deal with. I'm afraid when you say you have 1" x 1" holes, by the time you get rid of the rotten metal, you will have holes you can stick your whole fist into.

If it looks anything like Bob's roof - you are looking at some major metal repairs. :yup:

I am thinking a whole new roof. Depends on how close the holes are to each other and where they are located on the roof.

    Post up some pictures.

    Jerry,

I just hauled two roofs to the scrap metal last month. Could not even give them away.

I do have a good roof I can cut from a parts car. I think Getto? in Austin or San Antonio may have one too.

    Bedliner Roof

The roof was covered with a thin fiberglass mat or a bedsheet and risen. Sanded and spray on the bedliner. It has a nice even texture. You have to get close to tell it is not real vinyl.

Last pictures are of the bottom of the roof. I had several dime size holes.

Rick it be possible to install vinyl on top of bedliner? So you didn't weld patch of sheet metal to cover holes before the fiberglass?

If you are planning to install a vinyl top, then the body work can be a little more forgiving.
Another thing you can do, is cut the rust out, flange around the edge, then glue in a patch. Seal it properly it'll last forever under a vinyl top.

Rick, what bedliner brand did you used. Also was the roof patch first ,then fiberglass and bedliner?
