Hey everyone I am doing some body work on my mav and it seems the po did not primer before painting. No idea why. Any who I am wondering whether i should just sand the paint on it currently and keep that as the base or if i should remove all of the paint to bare metal and then primer it? paint where it hasnt bubbled rusted seems to be in good condition.

If I should remove it all any ideas for quick removal? flap sanding disc? wire wheel? paint thinner or other chemicals?

This is my take on this. Are you saying they sprayed paint staight to metal? If so you need to remove all the paint because paint itself is not made to go directly over metal, it will not bite and it will lift at some point. Now if there is factory paint as a base you should be fine as long as it was in decent shape to begin with. As far as a quick strip, I think there is no easy way short of have it dipped or sandblasted, and then you still hqae clean up. In my drive way I use aircraft stripper and a DA, and then alot of clean up.:D Research, make a plan and stick to it and you will get there.

How good of a job do you want to do on this paint job/restoration? Another way to put it: How much do you want to spend? If you really want a quality paint job, in my opinion, after looking at your pictures, that is going to require the car be media blasted. Your paint job....no matter how much you spend (or not spend on it) is only as good as the paint job underneath your paint.

So....how far do you go with this? Depends on:
    1. Your budget
    2. Your abilities
    3. Do you have the tools and equipment required?
    4. Do you have a garage?

Once we know the answers to these questions, your best bet might range from taking it to Maaco....to getting a complete nut and bolt restoration....to somewhere in between.

Looking at your pictures, it looks like they scuffed and painted over the original paint on your car, like Craig said, it all depends on what you are looking for.

well when ive been wire wheeling it goes from the blue on it to bondo or metal. did they use a grey primer of sorts out of the factory? paint seems to be fine where its not rusted.

As far as my budget its pretty tight. I do have paint equipment- thats not an issue. I have sand blasting tub/gun but not sure where to get the media for it or what to use. As far as quality in the build im looking to make it rust free and have every surface of the car painted or rust-proofed if I can. I will do all of the work myself.

One other question I had was do i paint or just primer the inside/non showing parts of the fenders? Reading through how-to's on painting seems after the body work is done and lines up they paint the car assembled.

Can you weld? That is the only REAL way to fix the rust.

Yes....I would PAINT the inside of the fenders.

Yep i can weld. Started trying to fill some pin holes yesterday on the fender. Its a bit of work to do it. since its thin where the rust is but its getting there. Also got the rust patched and cleaning the backside of the fender up. Between using the grinder and wire wheel its taking a while.
