I decided to remove this riveted in patch in the passenger side floorboard/toe board of my new 77 2dr Maverick and fix it the right way. And I'm glad I did! I find it hard to believe that someone would just cover up a mess like this.
Welcome to the club..... Mine was not quite that bad and all they did to mine was slap some bondo/tiger hair across..... and on the driver side they layed a piece of sheet metal in there so there was something to attach the headlight dimmer switch too..... Here's the pass side..... The sheet metal on the driver side and under it.....
Creative, easy and really bad repairs. or itcould be, "I just want to stop dropping change out onto the ground" Some folks don't care all that much
Hard to believe those are Florida floor boards. Gmatthew76's car looks like Indiana floor boards. Frankft floorboards looks like what we wish they would look like here in Indiana.
That's actually the only bad spot in the whole floorboard. Its in the toeboard area where the floorboard covers the torque box. What really surprises me is that the torque box is in great shape. I guess there must have been a pretty bad leak at one time although I've poured a few gallons of water into the cowl on both sides with no sign of water making its way inside.
In defense of the previous owners: it could have been a very small spot of rot, and it was a "temporary" fix to just "cover" it "for now". I had a 76 Pontiac Formula, I had a hole in the floor i used to drop beer bottles through (not recommended) . I "fixed" it before I sold it w/ a piece of plywood and a quart of bondo back in 88. I have nightmares about it now, but it seemed like a good idea at the time! I bet alot of you have done it!
As you can see by the rust those aren't new cuts. The PO tried to cut out the bad spot but gave up and just covered it instead. I probably would have left his patch in place if he had used some thicker sheet metal.
have you seen the half inch plywood with a ton of roof tar? i was the lucky guy who got deal with that.
