    Hey guys,

I started my car one day and it worked fine. Turned it off and tried to start it again but no luck. It just makes a whining sound. I thought the solenoid might have stopped working. I went and got it tested and it passed. Any ideas would help. Thanks.

    It's 72 200ci 6i if that helps at all.

    Thanks in advance.

sounds like the starter motor has died.

So even with that dead, it would pass the test? (sorry, kind of new)

I haven't tried it yet. I'll check it tomorrow. One thing that just occurred to me (not sure if it's relative) is that the gear selector slips. When i start it i have to hold it up in the park position. The car dies if it slips after it starts. Can this be part of the problem?

Thanks. I'll double check the connects and try it in neutral.

Sounds like a neutral safety switch issue as well as a possible starter or charging issue. An old trick to check an alternator is to run a straight wire to the + side of the battery to the big post on the Alt. If the motor drags like you just turned on an ac motor then the Alt is working. Just passing on some old school info.

the wining noise when you go to start it the noise starts off fast then slows down more and more till it stops ? if so it's the starter not kicking out to ingauge the flexplate thus not turning over the motor

I have to agree with 302-72-mav if the starter is turning when the key is in the start position but the engine is not then more then likely you have a starter problem. If your going to own an old car do your self a favor and buy a cheap digital volt meter, learn how to check voltage but most important thing to learn is how to preform a voltage drop test, this will save you a lot of grief, Good luck.

the solenoid is separate from the starter.
did you have the solenoid tested or the starter tested?
when you say it just makes a whining sound, does the whining sound come from the starter motor of from the dash of the car?
is the engine turning over but not starting or is it not even turning over?

The whining sound comes from the dash area. Or closer to it. the engine is not turning over. and i guess i had the starter tested

the starter is mounted to the right rear side of the engine and is approximately 20lbs. The solenoid is on the right inner fender and is approximately . 1lb.
Check to see if your getting a 12 volt signal to the "s" terminal on the solenoid when the key is in the start position.
