I've got an old grabber hood thats in need of some fairly major repair work. The skin is in real good shape(except for some rust along the windshield side edge), but the support structure is in horrible shape. Has anyone had any luck re-skinning using a standard Mav hood structure? I worked on it for a while this afternoon and finally got the skin separated from the support. It wasn't really all that tough, only a couple of spot welds to deal with. The worst part was tackling the glued parts without warping the skin.
Yep been done on here a number of times. I did one myself over 20 years ago. Wasnt very hard at all. Just have to be patient.
Yep still working on mine...just get a good frame from a flat hood and go at it, yours can't be as bad as mine!!!
Like I said Roger, "much worse". It's hard to believe that the skin is still in pretty good shape when you get a look at the frame.
I've got a standard flat hood that the underside looks like that. Top looks to be rust free. Wonder if maybe the car had a battery explode sometime and coat the underside of the framework, and wasn't washed off properly. Or may have just been Fords p-poor paint job on the bottom side....
I have seen bodymen reinforce under hoods with thin flat steel plates . You could use your imagination, or use the lower half of a good, later model hood......cutting and shaping. You have to have fit,tie down and hinge bolt threads --- if you use them.
