Side pipes, anyone?

I am restoring a 73 Comet GT, installing a 5.0 roller motor and have a 5 speed tranny out of a Cobra. I just want a nice car, not an obnoxious hot rod. I am thinking of putting on the chrome side pipes, like I had in high school. You gotta admit, they do look good! But I do not want it to sound like a garbage truck that lost its muffler. The glass packs in the side pipes are probably too loud? Is there a better fix... such as using a second set of mufflers... or what? Suggestions, thoughts, prayers?

I had the Patriot Side Pipes, in 60" length. I would probably go with the 70" ones if I did it again. I did not think that the 60s filled the side of the car as much as I would have liked. Especially up front toward the front wheels.

It had a really nice sound. Not really loud, no drone, and yet had a powerful sound. Even on my stock engine. The only time it was loud was when you went over a bridge with cement walls on both sides, then the sound would bounce back at you.

I only took them off because my muffler guy was not able to get them to work with long tube headers. I would go back to them in a second!

Why does the thought of "Speed Bump" and "crunch" come to mind?

For sidepipe muffler alternatives, look to the Factory Five Cobra discussion board. It has been a long time since I hung out there, but there were some really good mufflers being made IIRC.

Speedbumps were not an issue, but I hit several other things with them. In fact, bent in a chunk of the outlet coming off the ramp at the muffler shop when I got them installed.

It really depends on how low your car sits. Since I sit a little lower now, I probably couldn't do it...

I have old Cherry Bombs on mine but have sidepipe covers. It allowed me to tuck them up nice and tight to the body. I am wary of speed bumps but have never had problems. If you know a good fab guy it might be an option.

I love sidepipes, one of the coolest mods you could do! I think the 70" would look way better too, just to fill up that gap there streamlines a lot nicer.

My father in law and I were going to make a set of pipes, but I figure since I've got so much work to do already. I might just buy something instead of fab'ing everything o.o

I always liked the looks of the old Thrush side pipes. All cast aluminum, with square outlets.
