What do you all think about a Sbf turbo diesel in a maverick. This motor would be based off of a 5.0 block. I have the money for such a build just wanna hear some opinions from fellow maverick owners
i dont know if the 5.0 block is strong enough for diesel. also would require custom pistons aftermarket rods and most likely a crank. then there is the problem of the fuel injection system for diesel. ive never heard of a gas motor being made into a diesel. im going to google it. do you have experience in doing this or know of it having been done?
The work that it required was extraordinary. Easy enough to do. The cylinder headlines was the most diffucult. Making way for glow plugs the injectors went through where zparkplugs would normally go. Custom crank, cam and pistons were easy just forged. Very expensive and time consuming.I opted out of the turbo just cause I didn't figure the bottom end would take to that being a 170. Price of the build was around 4000. So cheap cuz I did it backyard hillbilly style. Very unique and rewarding project
The 302/5.0 block isn't as stout as an inline six. I would go with a 351w instead. Then the normal stuff like forged crank, rods, etc. Last I would go with Cometic head gasket, but, I would call them to ask what they could do for that kind of engine.
Pretty much what GM did in the late seventies after the second fuel crisis....They ended up being such pieces of **** that most people had shops rip 'em out and replace them with gas engines...There were some diesel blocks though that savvy pro stock engine builders used for build ups
I would like to see pictures of the 170 you converted. Sounds like a job. I agree with an above post though, the 302 doesn't have as much stoutness or meat to be modifying as the inline six. The 170 you previously worked on has thicker walls & would be easier to modify over a 302 IMO.
The 302 will rattle itself in half as a diesel. I don't think a windsor would fair better Maybe a cleveland based motor or fe series
See that's what I have is a mexican block. The girdle on top of the ample supply of metal the block has to offer should be successful enough. I guess its just a trial and error thing. Ill post pictures of the 170 before and after. And same process with the 302
If u have the desire, financial resourses, past exp. w/ diesel conversions and believe the mexican block is up to the task ----I say go for it. I also recall the GM engines that were diesel conversions in I believe late 70's or early 80's that prove to be lemons. Also, remember the engines that had some of the cylinders cut/off in an effort to save fuel - these were also vry troublesome.
Im gonna do it man. Its unique for a maverick and im sure of done right it'll prove to be a killer. I even have come up with a title " the powerstrokin smokin maverick" yeah I think rolls along good
Yep changed a few of them over with wrecker gas engines. They were dangerous to drive. Barely get the car rolling, never mind trying to pull out into traffic. MAde a 2.2 k car look fast.
