Just got an E-Mail about this...Wonder what it will sell for??? http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_d...vra&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=FL0112_S219 After a spectacular season of heads-up racing in Super Stock, in late 1969 the NHRA announced the new no-handicap Pro Stock class for the 1970 season. Super Stock racers flocked to the new class, including veteran racer-tuner “Dyno Don” Nicholson, who built this famous 427 SOHC-powered 1970 Ford Maverick. Nicholson constructed the car in seven days for its season debut at the NHRA Winternationals in February 1970. The car became a dominant force on the match racing circuit, at one point winning 45 straight rounds. Nicholson's Maverick later made drag racing history, becoming the first Ford to win an NHRA Pro Stock title at the 1971 Summernationals at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. Nicholson retired the Maverick after the 1971 season. It remained in excellent condition through three caring owners until it was purchased in 2004 by Ford collector Wayne Jeffers, who showed the car for several years. Today the Dyno Don Pro Stock Maverick still remains almost completely original, from its bright Candy Apple Red, Orange and White “Mr. Gasket” livery right down to the track grime on the undercarriage, with only minor modifications to keep it legal for strip use. The exceptionally rare 427 Cammer engine, built by Nicholson's crew chief Earl Wade and maintained to Pro Stock specification, received a complete service in the summer of 2011 and is in good running condition. A genuinely historically significant drag racer in essentially turnkey form, the 1970 “Dyno Don” Nicholson Pro Stock Maverick is ready to serve as the cornerstone of any collection.
Lucky Me My name is Bob Hasty and I'll be with the Dyno Don Maverick at auction. I'm planning to drive it across the block as well. Anybody with questions about it feel free to call me. 309-241-5540. PS, I owned a 1972 Comet GT in my early 20's. It had 100,000 miles when i got it and I put another 100,000 before it got hit and I sold it to the insurance Co. The frame already had several weld repairs from rust LOL.
Cool car! The Fast Eddie Maverick is also currently for sale, being discussed on another thread. Would be awesome to own them both.
yep I have had a few talks with Frank. He loves that car but he knows it's time to sell it. It went to $206,000 at Mecum in Indy last spring but he would not pull the reserve. He found it with no drive train and repainted. All he did was repaint it back to the fast eddie theme and drop in a killer boss 29. Otherwise just like it was raced. These 2 cars should be together.
I have a few different pictures of the Dyno Don car on the walls in our family room, they are from the 70's. I bought them from some dealer years ago in Carlisle. I've always loved the look of that car.
Model Car One of those little kit model cars of the dyno don maverick just sold on ebay for $152.00. still in the box of coarse.
I agree! There's nothing I'd love more than to own the pair of them and take them around the country to shows and exhibition races. I saw the Dyno Don car in Atlanta about 5-6 years ago and saw it run a few times. Got some good pics of it on the track.
That was Wayne Jeffers driving it with the new SOHC engine that Earl Wade built for it. Sadly Wayne pasted a year ago. He tried to buy the fast eddie car but Frank was not willing to sell it at that time.
Yeah, I knew he had passed away. Sad to see that. If I was rich I'd give them both a home. Or you guys could just get together and donate them to a true Maverick enthusiast that would take great care of them for years! Hey...a mans gotta try...right?
Yes his long time girlfriend ended up with it as part of the estate. Thats how I ended up involved with it. As she told me, I need help, I'm just a dumb woman with a race car, lol. She is a sweetheart.
we taqlked to Frank about bringing his car to the Maverick Comet Group Gathering in Joplin, Mo a few years back. He used to get on a talk forum we had for the MCG.
I saved the listing when it was on Ebay. Not a single bid. $250K. Great pictures though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/150691419273?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
Just a test before listing it with Mecum. I did get a $150,000 offer from that ebay auction. He was pretty darn close to owning it but he would not budge. He said he was going to the auction, I bet he'll be there and kicking his own axx, lol.
The Fast Eddie and Dyno Don cars are a big part of NHRA history and both great Mavericks, but reality will need to set in here. They are not gold mines. $150-200K is an astounding amount of money and that is the top they will go for unless you get some rich guy that has more money and ego then brains bidding. If these cars were THAT desirable, and $250k+ valued the true race car collectors would have bought them when first offered. Even T.V. Tommy Ivo's 4 engine dragster did not hit that number in Reno and it has a far larger following then both of these Mavericks combined. There are a few surprises ($200K VW Van at Barrett/Jackson, OC Cal 2011), but they are few and far between. If these guys are holding out for quarter million pay days I hope they don't hold their breath waiting.
