Is there a list somewhere of what I need to replace if I am just putting the same size engine into the car? I did try to search the forum, but no luck.

If there is one, please point me there, if not, please help me out. Pretend you're making a list for "auto repair for dummies." Thanks.

It will be a simple R&R job (remove and replace)

Not all 6 cyl were the same. They were some minor changes year to year. The exhaust manifold size and exhaust pipe, high or low mount starter and bellhousing. Other things like pre emission vs post emission timing gear set. Valve size, combustion chamber volume and different intake log size and shape were also changed through the years. The 250 block is a different animal than the 170-200

Good to know. I'll try to keep things simpler by sticking with a 250 if possible.

Thank you! Looks like more work than I want to do...I'll stick to a 250.

I've personally had two 200's and a 250 in my car. To go from a 250 to a 200 I had to replace the bell housing, torque converter, flex plate, modify the exhaust down pipe from the manifold (the 200 is shorter) and swap the 250's thermostat housing onto the 200 (or just replace the upper radiator hose with the proper one for a 200). It is a direct swap other then that. Motor mounts are the same and everything.

The water pump, water pump pulley, and the alternator brackets are not interchangeable between a 200 and a 250 IIRC, so you'd need to find a motor complete with those.

I would do the general maintenance items. The one I have for you would love a tune-up I'm sure. We can talk more when you call back.

Pretty much, I have a runner I was going to scrap and saw the post where he showed his newly aerated block. I'd rather give it to someone in need than throw it away.

Thanks Rick! I'm excited to get into your old 250 and mine and see if I can make this car come back to life!

You're welcome! I had many helping hands when I was younger and learning the ropes, it's my time to give back.

Got the new 250 mounted today. Next steps, clean it up, figure out what I need to pull and keep from the old engine, and slap it back together.

Looks much better there than in the scrap heap!
