On my new Maverick I just got the vinyl top still looks brand new after 40 years. No rips or fading and I want to keep it that way. So I'm looking for something I can put in it to keep it looking new. I found some Mothers Leather Cleaner but its for the inside. I don't want anything that will dry it out or streak and NO ARMORAL... This car is amazingly great shape
I'm not sure who I'm quoting this from..but someone on this forum once said, "There are two types of vinyl tops; Those that have rust, and those that will have rust." If it was my car I would clean the top with murphy's oil and be sure the car is garage kept, which I'm sure this car was if the top is original. Sun and water will wear them out in a jiffy.
Whatever you use, don't use Armor All!! There are some pretty high quality products for boats. that have UV protection. I doubt that car would have any rust under the top, my 74 was an outside car all it's life up until 10 years ago, I pealed the vinyl top off, and found no rust at all.
Vinyl tops were popular by the big 3 here in the states in the 70's. Made a non convertible look like a convertible and later just used for styling purposes. They do look good IMO. I agree with Dave, DO NOT USE ARMOR ALL, unless you plan to cook it like bacon
POR 15 has a product they say does wonders for vinyl. I haven't personally tried it, but I would like to. My top appeared to be in great shape when I bought it in 98 and that very day we had the worst hail storm in 10 years. I watched baseball sized hail beat the snot out of all of our cars. The top literally peeled off 3 days later while driving down the interstate. The Sentra tailgating me wasn't happy...:16suspect http://www.por15.com/POR-GLO/productinfo/VRH/
Yep I'm the lucky guy. Because of its low miles and being driven its burns oil but I'm trying a couple of things to hopefully loosen up the rings. Going to pull the valve cover off to check out the the seals. I'm also getting a ton of carbon fouling the plugs. I have been driving the crap out of it in hopes it will soon stop with out taking the head off. Been running 91 octane and lucas next tank of gas I will add a little of Mystery oil it may kill my plugs but if it helps to loosen all the junk in the motor it will be worth it.
Hey guys. Just stumbled across this thread. I really like the way vinyl tops look and am contemplating having one added to my vehicle. Here's the question: Any ideas on where the find the chrome trim pieces for the back portion of the vinyl? The ones just behind the quarter-windows? Does anyplace like Autokrafters sell them? The junkyards around here don't have any. Thanks, Eric
