hi guys, i want to get an exhaust system for the mav but i'm super noob with it comes to exhaust systems. i want to get flowmaster but i don't know which ones or how much it's going to cost. can you guys chime in on what i should get and how much it would cost me.
Along with what you learn here, check with people (car clubs, car shows, friends) in your area to see who does good, reasonably-priced custom exhaust systems. Then visit the shop(s) and see what they have to say about installation and price. I found two good custom exhaust shops in my area by asking around.
I paid about $325 for dual 2.5" pipe dumping behind the rear axle with Flowmaster knockoffs. Later on, I put headers and cut outs on the car, parts alone was about 220 and welding and cutting was another 100.
I have a 73 mav which gonna be weekend kickoffs. I don't want that crazy sound but something that will complement the V8.
I've run flowmasters and would advise against them honestly, pick up a set of turbo mufflers. They're as loud as flowmasters at Wide Open throttle but are much more pleasant sounding at idle -mid range. Plus they're a TON cheaper, $40 for a pair vs $140-200 for a pair of flowmasters. Then a muffler shop should be able to make you an exhaust for $200-$300. If you're dead set on flowmasters get a set from a junkyard, I got a set of almost new genuine 40 series for $36.
I'm partial to DynoMax Super Turbos, not too loud while cruising but sound good when you're on it. And they outflow the similar sized Flowmasters. A 2 1/4" exhaust with an H-pipe will suit a basically stock engine and leave some room to grow. Do you have, or are you getting, headers?
They're the Mr Gasket ones and were definitely a learning experience for me as they don't seal at all, I've run them wide open since about a day after I got them because when they're closed they rattle like HELL! If you were to get cut outs, I'd recommend some high quality electric ones. From what I've heard QTP makes good ones.
sorry I should have explained a little before babbling lol. kickoff for me means taking the car for a drive around the strip as i live in las vegas.
