i love it its the best thing i have ever done to date i would recommend it to any one just starting out. i just need to add this at my track we have 3 classes sportsman,pro and super pro when you get into the 2 pro classes its all race cars not many street cars and it puts everybody on an even playing field if you are good you win if not you go home and i like challenging myself.i got to run a pro tree yesterday and man i did not like that.
My first time on a pro tree left me napping at the line! I got better by the time we went to eliminations though. We had a long drive home that night and I kept tripping the win light. Only reason we went to that track was so my wife could ride with me and see what it was all about. We finally loaded the car on the trailer and gave a guy a by run. Too much fun watching her excitement after the first run!:bananaman
I must say that one thing i HATE is electronics. I like the bracket classes that you run your car all out. Thats fun. I will never run electronics. Heads up just costs to much for me. Index racing would be fun. build the car to run the index.
I haven't raced in years, but never did care for the bracket racing that much. Track I ran at had a kind of index racing, you had to stay within a certain range of time or you would break out. It was all heads up. Seems like it was 1 sec range, 5.0, 6.0, 10.0, etc. You could run slower than the time, but not faster. Saw a 6.0 car beat a 5.0 car a lots of times because the faster guy thought he had it made and would run too fast.
test and tune is more exciting to me than...bracket racing...at least they are trying to go faster each run. bracket racing gives a new meaning to...DRAG racing... I thought the whole thing about drag racing was to see who is the fastest... it's like any other sport...it takes money to be on top... my Son at 6yrs. old shot compitition artchery...he won the nationals 3 years straight...his bow was $300, his arrows were $21 each. the other kids shot a...stick and string from Wally World. was it his equiptment or his skill... the middle pic. are his...
The whole thing about Drag Racing is to be the fastest... That's why it's called Bracket Racing...NOT Drag Racing. In Drag Racing there is only one way to lose... Get to the finish line last. In Bracket Racing there is about 1001 ways to lose... And I think I've done them all.
I have been bracket racing for 25+ years, for those of you that have been around racing for that long there several +'s to bracket racing back in the day, racing was heads up, they used your factory hp and matched you up with other people and you raced heads up, people cheated and the guy with the most money or cheated won, in the 70's the heads up race to win was dying, and bracket racing was invented, it allowed people to bring there cars and compete without having the fastest car, the sport exploded and bracket racing became a popular way to compete on a weekley basis, for those of you that have done it, you know how hard it can be, and super competitive. and fun. Racing heads up is fun, but it would be very hard to show up every sunday and find people to race every week and have competetive races, unless you want to race someone in a yugo one week and a turbocharged 9 second mustang the next week. doesnt seem that fun huh? if you want a combination of both, run NHRA super stock or stock eliminator, thats were you build a car under NHRA rules, they classify the car, you qualify on how fast you run under the index(classification) and then bracket race, when you run a car in your same class, its a heads up race, the faster car wins, but the other cars are a bracket race. My brother ran a 72 gto in G/SA (g stock automatic) he has won divisionals, won the O'riely nationals in Charlotte, and finished in the top 10 in national points and top 3 in div points several times,He now runs a 1968 Firebird 400 stick car, Now thats competetive racing. Mavericks can be run in Stock or Super Stock and running your car on test and tune night over and over gets very boring. I have a 10 second Boss 302 maverick and have fun bracket racing, so to me its fun!
The Maverick I have was originally built for NHRA B/SM...............I'd love to back and race in the SM class...........although I'd need to work to be competitive...........but since the towers have been shaved I can't.....or I'd be there. Yes, although I don't care for bracket racing I will do some.......just to be n the track....................it's not about racing the guy in the lane besides you, it's about racing yourself.....................always has been.......IMHO

You can race SS/GT with the car cant you? they convert FWD to RWD and have seen them pretty modified, but would have to check the Rulebook. did you ever get the engine back in your car? Duane
No, not the way it sits right now, as I took all of the carpeting out of the car mainly because it had been there for so long it smelled like gas/oil. I really hadn't looked at the SS/GT, but I'll go over the 2012 rules a little more closely. The engine and trans are just waiting to be hooked up together, then dropped into the car...........then some fab work on the trans mount and motor mounts............an alignment of the front end.........a few misc things and we are ready to head for the strip. Can't wait to see how the new motor pushes the car compared to the old one...........
I enjoyed racing in the stock classes back in the late 60's and early 70's. I had better luck on the street from light to light though.
...and this is different than a 15 sec. car runnng over and over trying not to go faster than 15 secs....
I personally love to Bracket Race. I do not have endless money or a sponsor. Bracket racing makes a person become one with their machine. You have to know exactly how the car is going to react under any given condition. You don't have to worry about if your tune is exact or if you have a gallon to much fuel in the car. As had been said before, YOU ARE RACING YOURSELF! It gives the guy that likes to race and doesn't have a lot of money to spend a chance to win under any circumstances. I always have raced in a non electronic foot brake class. Its all about you and your car. There is a need for Bracket Racing. A lot of people don't like racing someone slower than them because they have to wait to leave the line and they get distracted or antsy. The result is either a red light or you just have some milk and cookies and leave a little late. My thought is if you have the money, run in the pro classes heads up, if you have some money to spend then run in the index classes and if you are like most of us and don't have a lot of money to spend then bracket race. There is a need for it because it is about seeing how fast you can make your car go on the budget you have. As long as there is tire smoke in the air and adrenaline coursing through your veins then you have hit your goal. I had to give up racing several years ago, just not enough time or money to continue. I am now getting to the point where I may be able to get things turned around a bit and get something built to get back into it a bit. One final thing to say, Just get out there and race, no matter if you have $200,000 in your car or $2000. Have fun and see where it takes you.
